Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap plastic breaks easily For the price, this is a rip off. If you decide to buy this, weigh it down with stones on the inside (the instructions don't tell you that), seal up the valve with silicone where it attaches to the barrel.

We have 3 of these and for the price I think they are a good deal but the quality could be better. One had a faulty installation of the hose bib attachment so it would leak and eventually came off. I repaired it but the hose bibs are made of plastic including where you attach the hose so the quality is not that great. One came without a hose at all (the 3-foot or so hose) and the manufacturer shipped a new one to us. The hose fittings are prone to leak as well. As these are for outside, a few drips may not bother anyone but a couple of ours are placed on pavers so the dripping is a nuisance. Finally, there is a way to hang the hose on the barrel but it too is very simply and not a good design to securely hang the hose. Cheap for the size and shape and color, cheap in build too. Very lightweight so easy to move when empty.

I needed this because when it rained a lot the back yard would be under water. Now I can catch the runoff and slowly release it.

The overflow drains are a solid piece of plastic, there is no opening in the plastic to attach a hose to in case if fills up to that point. What are you supposed to do? Cut out an opening?
Asked by: Susan
When I found that the barrel would get full I just turned the drain valve just enough to release the water SLOWLY thru the hose.

Does this rain barrel have a lid made to work as a planter?

Several of the rain barrels on the Home Depot website show the option of using the top of the barrel as a planter. Is that an option for this barrel?
Asked by: PatioGardener
No. The top is a round, perforated grate.

Can a down spout be connected to this?

I'm looking for a stylish rain barrel to collect water from a down spout, but I can't find any information about it with this item. I'm thinking their may be a kit of some kind (diversion), but I'm not sure.
Asked by: Nani
No kit needed, just add whatever elbows you need to the downspout so it spills onto the top of the barrel.

Can the top be removed....I don't have a down spout

How high and wide is it
Asked by: roderick
Are you wanting to set it out in the open and let it fill with raindrops? The round perforated top can be removed (it has a couple of screws) but I think it would take forever to fill.

Can it be directly attached to the down spout without using a diverter? What is the diameter of the unit?

Asked by: Orchid
It looks like the Home Depot Associate who answered this left out some info. It can be attached with a diverter kit or via just letting water run in from the downspout. You know this is the case if you look it up on Amazon and watch the video. How else would the fountain water get into it if it must go thru the diverter?
