Rated 3 out of 5 by from Floating shelf Even though the shelf is 36” the bracket on which the shelf is installed is 23”. Most walls have 16 or 24” stud openings, so you’ll have to secure one side to stud and use butterfly anchors for other side. But shelf is great other than that.

Would it be easy to cut one side to custom fit flush to a wall if it was an inch to wide?

I wouldn't recommend it. They're hollow inside and pretty flimsy. Don't think they'd cut well at all.
