Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I have had this product for 4 years now. We have the unit in the furnace room for the CO2 detection. Yes, when the batteries are low, the unit will advise you. I think that is better than not knowing at all as most people do not test their units regularly. I like the fact that it detects both smoke and CO2. I will be purchasing a new one when the time comes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Awkward switch/trap in battery compartment The unit didn't come with something to hold the switch (probably a safety switch) down in place of the batteries so there was no way to slide the lid out to put batteries in. That switch was sticking up there blocking the lid. I tried using a small screwdriver to hold it down while sliding the lid - no luck! It was frustrating. I didn't want to go through the hassle of returning/exchanging it due to COVID-19 so I eventually forced the lid pop up out of the gliding grid so I could put the batteries in, then forced the lid back on. After that all was good. The thing talked so it was easy to understand what all the different beeping meant.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Too many false alarms. Too annoying. Do you want to know if your neighbour blew out a candle? Then this is the alarm for you. I liked the concept of this alarm but after 6 months of ownership it's spent more time off the ceiling than on it. Too many false alarms and too much talking. Last night at 3am it decided the battery was dead so it announced it at every hour. Off the ceiling again. What good is a smoke detector that you can't stand to keep the batteries in it?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed after 2 years I installed this expensive unit in 2016 and it's stamped expiry date was 2024. When I recently changed batteries, it now beeps once very 30 seconds. Tried different batteries, same issue. Test does not work...generates 3 short beeps & flashes (this is NOT listed in the documentation). NOT IMPRESSED.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy it I brought two of this device and installed it in my house. One of them basically does not work and I don't see the green led flashing. Tested with a burnt toast, one of them work but the same one does not. Called the support line. The support lady basically told me that I am using the wrong kind of batteries. It has to be Energizer Max E91, the one comes with the package. She said that it has to be Energizer E91. I asked her how she can explain why the burnt toast triggered one but not the other. She said that the burnt toast test is not the recommended test from Kidde. Well, if it does not go off when there is smoke right below the smoke detector, how am I supposed to trust that it will alarm when there is actual smoke.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Features, Easy to Install The talking feature will be useful when the alarm sounds. I don't remember what the different codes mean when the alarm goes off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smoke and carbon Monoxide Detector Needed a unit that monitored smoke from fire and carbon monoxide from the fireplace. This unit does both. It works very well (as it should). The voice message is clear and audible bit different than the beeping. I would recommend this product.

Can this mount to an octagon box?

Asked by: Cristin
This alarm is not a valid replacement for a hardwired alarm. Building and fire code require hardwired alarms to be replaced by hardwired alarms. This model is great for areas not already covered by hardwired alarms.

I asked if this can mount to an octagon box not if it can be hardwired. My current smoke alarm is battery powered but the bracket is mounted to an empty (no electrical wires) octagon box installed in the drywall. Can this bracket attach to an octagon box?

Asked by: Cristin
No. The base of the smoke detector unit is screwed into the ceiling. The smoke detector is then screwed to the base. In your case if you filled or screwed a piece of wood into your oblong box, you may be able to screw the smoke alarm base to it. Hope this helps.

Hi, someone mentioned that this product will not pass a fire investigation. Is that correct and for what reason? If that correct for passing fire investigation which type of detector should I get? Thanks

Asked by: Bill
New builds require a direct-wire detector, hooked into the home wiring.  Not sure if older homes have same requirement.  Also, apartments need direct-wired and linked to other apartments.

CO alarms are placed at knee length, whereas smoke alarms are usually placed in the ceiling. Where and what level would you place this combined smoke/CO alarm? Knee length? Ceiling? Thanks!

Asked by: Joey0806
A common misconception is that CO is "heavy" and is only detectable at lower levels. Not true. It can disperse throughout the home. If that was the case, then CO detectors would only be used in the basement. Combination detectors should be installed at EVERY level of the home, and especially near sleeping areas. Ceiling level (on every level) is fine!! Side note: It is also a good idea to install a gas detector in your basement/furnace are for extra measure to detect the "heavier" gasses (eg. Home Depot #1000135647).

How long do the batteries last?

Asked by: yuri
Battery only alarms should have their batteries changed every 6 months - regardless of low battery warning or not. Your alarm needs to be able to sound an alarm for a minimum of 4 hours in the event of a fire so if you wait for a low battery warning, the alarm will not last that long.

Is this alarm compatible with the Kidde 0916KCA? I'd like to simply remove the old alarm and replace it with the new one without having to change the base. Thanks.

Asked by: poppy213
the brackets are not the same. It is easy to change the bracket as you only need to loosen the two screws.
