Rated 2 out of 5 by from Battery beast Since I bought this alarm about four months ago, I have had to change the batteries five times. I bought it because it works with the Wink hub and is cheaper than Nest Protect, but the battery problem is a deal breaker. I don't know how well it works as a smoke/CO detector - maybe it's fine - but being woken up every couple weeks in the middle of the night with non-silenceable chirps and spoken warnings about low batteries just isn't acceptable. Nest Protect claims their batteries last five years(!), and will silently verify battery life with a friendly light each night BEFORE you go to sleep. Given the cost of batteries and the peace of mind, the Nest Protect is looking like much better value.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good if you get a Good One Many reviews of poor battery life. These are faulty units that Kidde should have recalled. I bought 2 with a WINK hub and was satisfied with their operation, still same batteries 10 months later. Then bought 5 for a different location, batteries all died in 1 month. After contacting Kidde a couple of times and running tests, they sent me 5 replacements, which are all good. I sent back the 5 originals for them to examine (no response from Kidde about that) They apparently had a bad batch. Do not settle for faulty ones, make sure Kidde replaces your battery-hungry alarms. How can an alarm with dead batteries make you safe? I estimate that a good unit should have batteries lasting well over 1 year, based on my tests. As these seem to be the only alarms that you can monitor remotely, (but it's not a perfect nor complete monitoring design), there is nothing else out there if you need this feature.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Batteries only last 1 month I bought four of these smoke detectors 6 months ago and have replaced the batteries on all of them at least 5 times already. Batteries only last 1 month. Very annoying waking up at 2am to replace batteries a few times every month for various units. Kidde Customer Service recommends Energizer batteries, however, it doesn't make a difference in battery life.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NO BATTERY LIFE Similar to other reviews here. I have 3 units in one house. I have had to change the batteries every month for 3 straight months. There seems to be a serious flaw with the product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Working As Desired I was in need of replacing our ten year old hard wired detectors and opted to include one of these in the mix. I went with the standard non-Wink tried and tested hardwired units for the three existing locations and put this detector beside the hardwired unit on our main level. My goal was to have Wink become fire aware, alert us, and trigger things to be turned on/off automatically. Mission accomplished. The initial pairing caused me grief due to one of the switches not registering properly. I reversed the combination I chose and Wink/Kidde talked immediately after that. The battery life appears to be fine so far two months in, I will not hesitate to contact Kidde if that changes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great until Wink went to a subscription model I have five of these. They work fine as smoke detectors and I have not experienced the low battery issues. I bought these because they inter-connect wirelessly so when one sounds, they all sound and they worked with Wink. However, within a few months of purchasing the last one Wink went to a subscription model, meaning I can no longer access them using my Wink or receive alerts unless I now pay $5 US per month. Therefore, although still perfectly usable smoke alarms that interconnect, the Wink feature is now useless. No other home automation platform supports them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great concept, but poor build quality I bought 4 of these after New Years and installed them this weekend. I followed the instructions and they connected immediately after setting the dip switches and powering them up. They also synced quickly with my Wink Hub 2. However, the build quality could be better. Firstly, the little plastic tab/hinges for the battery door immediately broke on two of them. This is not a big deal as the door latches, but is indicative of poor design and brittle plastic. The hinges need to be beefier. Then, when I installed the fourth one, the tabs on the hanger piece broke so the alarm wouldn't be held up to the ceiling. Our house has plaster board (as opposed to gypsum board) so when I screwed the hanger to the ceiling, it didn't sink in flush. There are four small spikes on the ceiling side of the hanger to prevent it from twisting and the plaster board is too hard for them to sink into. Be careful when mounting and don't suck it up to the ceiling. Make sure the base of the hanger is parallel to the ceiling and not concave. I have requested another hanger/post through Kidde customer support. They also have a paper label glued to them indicating that they interconnect. Upon removal, glue stuck to the detector so I had to use Goo Gone to remove it. Is the paper label really necessary? I haven't had them long enough to see what battery life is like, but I note mine were all manufactured July 31, 2015. I guess we will see. Overall, the concept is excellent, but the execution is poor. Depending on battery life and given the great price. I may pick up one or two more but at this point I'm taking a wait and see approach.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible battery life. Purchased 2 of these in January 2016. I have replaced the batteries in both of these units 4 times! Wink compatibility is not worth 6 batteries a month. I purchase recommended Energizer e91 batteries as recommended in the manual. Brutal! Kidde Support - I would like these to be replaced with wired units. Call me..... Thanks!

Model # 900-0225CA | Store SKU # 1000837077 Do u need a wink hub to install? I do not have nor plan to have. r they compatible with the wireless Kidder smoke alarm only ? tganks

Asked by: codeclements
These only need a wink hub if you want to monitor them over the internet. Without a Wink hub, multiple units will still interconnect themselves wirelessly so that if one goes off, all will alarm. As far as I can see, they are not compatible with any other models of wireless alarms. I own 7 of these.

Without connection to 120v are these alarms approved for use by Ontario Building Code? ie. if I install them will they pass inspection for a NEW build?

Asked by: Keith
No they are not. And in Ontario the fire code even requires strobe light for a new built since last year. Ridiculous.... My house is not a commercial place that everyone can stay.

Will this wirelessly interconnect to other kidde wireless alarms?

Asked by: mike
Unfortunately no. This alarm will only interconnect to others of this model only. This model came out a few years ago and rules were different then from now, as a result, if we want to be able to continue using already installed units and expand the network, we need to keep using the same technology.
