In December of 2017, we purchased a full line of Kitchenaid Stainless Steel appliances for $5K (fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher). We LOVE the function of the appliances and have not had ANY issues other than cosmetic. Every single one is rusting. I noticed it around one year later. When I would clean them, the rag was starting to turn yellow. This became more and more prominent and then you could see hundreds of small rust spots which every so slowly began to grow. I called Kitchenaid in May of 2019 and despite the issue not being covered, they sent someone out who verified that “Yes, that’s a lot of rust!” and did not believe there was any reason to believe we were at fault. Kitchenaid replaced both doors on the refrigerator, but understandably the other appliances were not such an easy fix. After MANY phone conversations and lots of suggestions of what I could try, they eventually told me replacing the doors on the fridge was a “good faith gesture,” but as all the appliances are rusting, they believe the problem is due to “the environment” they are being kept in. They admitted that their stainless steel is not actually completely stainless steel. They believe something has caused the protective coating that keeps the metal from rusting to be removed, causing the rust. They suggested numerous reasons as to how that could have happened. The humidity in “their environment” is too high. The appliances are in my kitchen, in a home in the middle of the midwest, not on a back porch or outdoor kitchen or even in a southern state where the humidty is higher. They suggested that perhaps I leave food out for too long and that has affected the “environment.” They suggested that the chlorine level in my water might be too high and that I should contact my city and start using bottled water to clean the appliances. The only time I ever used anything other than the Kitchenaid cleaner was when they sent me something else to try and those instructions stated to wipe off with water when I applied the treatment. They suggested I used lemon juice. We do have another stainless steel refrigerator. In the same house. Cleaned the same way. Over 10 years old. And NO RUST. It’s a Kenmore. A stainless steel wine fridge. No idea how old that is, but much older than the Kitchenaid appliances. NO RUST. A stainless steel toaster. 4 years old. No rust. Ultimately, I’m very disappointed that we upgraded to a brand that is well known for quality and are now stuck with perfectly functional, but rusting appliances.

The website for ordering on-line is very confusing, especially the specifications/product description not stating that this model door cannot swing to the other side and you must purchase one that opens on the side you want. And the two models should be side by side--not separated by a whole page. The fact that the front is stainless steel, and the sides are painted gray should also be in the product description. However, I am VERY happy with this model, correcting all the things that my old model was wearing doing--running constantly, not cold enough, etc. The drawers open and close easily, as do the doors. I could use a couple more door shelves.

Very surprised at the quality for a Kitchen Aid refrigerator, the bins are cheaply made and the bottom freezer lacks the smooth opening you would expect. This fridge was not in stock so we were unable to preview our purchase, also we were under the assumption that Kitchen Aid was manufactured in the USA, stickers with made in America appear on the fridge but on closer inspection it is made in China.

Most of adjustable shelves, in the body and on the inner door; lights in both refrigerator and freezer. 2 minor wishes .. that the door of the refrigerator closed on its own and that the surface was more easily cleanable ( requires a fair amount of work to get the smudges out). But I would recommend it for anyone with limited space and who does not want an ice maker.

The small drawers do not have stops to keep them from falling out when opened. When the drawers fall out they dent the top of the pullout freezer door. There should be some type of guard to protect the top of the freezer door. The drawers shouldn't fall out either.

States left hand hinge picture shows right hand , which is it ?

Asked by: reno
Hi Reno, KRBR109ESS has a right door swing, there is a left swing door version available; model number KRBL109ESS. This refrigerator has a Produce Preserver which absorbs ethylene gas emitted by many fruits and vegetables, causing them to over ripen. By removing ethylene, the produce preserver helps extend freshness.Hope this helps, thank you for your question!
