So we went with this Kohler DTV Therostatic shower valve and it's amazing. It works but a touch pad remote that can be mounted inside or outside the shower. You just press the power button and and set the temp.

It is a nice, clean, compact look in our shower. Great flow and great temperature control. It's nice to be able to pause the water while soaping/washing and then turn it on without any doubt about the temperature. You can also set the default starting temperature and default outlet (ie shower head, tub spout, etc). You can set a maximum and minimum temperature, too. The unit is not noisy. Installation requires hammer arrestors. Two big drawbacks: 1. A major reason we bought this was because the marketing material said that it conserved water while bringing it up to temperature; that is not true, there is no conservation of water while coming up to temp. We assumed that conservation meant that, on start-up, the hot-side water was sent back down to the cold-side until the hot-side reached temp. No ... it simply turns on and dumps water out of the shower head until it is hot - just like we used to do manually. That is not conservation. Granted, it is nice to push the button, brush my teeth, move some laundry, whatever, ... and then when the shower is at temp, it pauses and waits for you. But, ... 2. When the shower is paused, there is a 2 minute timer. If you don't start the shower within those 2 minutes then the unit will start from scratch (ie re-calibrate the water temperature starting at cold). It would be nice if this 2 minute could be changed through the settings but it cannot. Sometimes I need a little extra time.

Installation was straight forward, hardest part was changing the pipes behind the shower wall. Not much room to work. Used push to connect couplings to transition from valve copper pipes to pex pipes. Added hammer arrestors per conversation with Kohler sales personal. 20 foot cable between valve and controller was plenty. Only thing I've noticed in going from a standard shower valve behind the wall to this electronic valve is the delay from when water temperature is changed to when it actually gets to the shower head. Delay is from the water in the pipe between the shower head and the valve. Features I would like to see added is flow control and being able to lower the water temperature more. Valve and controller can lower temp to 86 degrees Fahrenheit, after that it's full cold.
