I thought that this was an interesting concept, even though I really didn't have a pressing application for this, thought I would try it. The unit definitely gets hot, will cook as well as heat up food well. However, you cannot really control the amount of heating (that would be a great feature, especially if I could use this simply to keep food "warm" during transport, running at a lower power). I also agree with others saying that a removable tray would make cleaning easier. I would also add an option for 120VAC use in addition to the 12VDC power which would make this item a lot more flexible to use. This would probably be a lot more useful for camping and boating rather than just for car trips, as needing to keep the engine running limits its use. May also might want to consider some sort of battery-operated version (though the heating requirements may make that difficult, though if it was a "low power" warming mode it may be perfect, I see a lot of uses for something like that. I did some research before choosing this item so I guess I knew the limitations in advance from other reviews and those who suggested using the foil liners. It takes a lot of power so the car definitely needs to be running if you are going to use this for more than a few minutes. It's best for keeping fast food warm like fries, egg rolls, fried chicken, or chinese take out with rice etc... You can leave the lid open sitting on the seat next to you while driving and pick at the food over time without it getting cold. The bottom doesn't get too hot. Put it on a towel if you are concerned. Worked great for re-heating baked potatoes. Also cooked raw brats. I didn't try it but I think Hobo dinners will work great. convenience foods like a hot pocket would work OK but they would be a bit soggy because it retains a lot of the moisture. The idea is to think within the limitations of the device. I knew for it to be convenient you have to use the foil trays. It heats up in a few seconds. But if you use foil and there is crinkles and air gaps it won't heat the food up as fast. You can use this to your advantage if the goal is to keep the food warm without cooking it. If the foil is smooth and flat against the bottom the heat will transfer directly to the food. If using an oven bag to heat liquids like soups or stews I suggest a foil liner as well because the bottom does get very hot. I am paranoid about cooking anything in plastic directly on a hot source. If you have an old school metal coffee cup it can hold two of them and keep the liquid hot. It is not totally spill proof with the lid closed so don't drive like this if they don't have a leak proof lid. It's definitely limited but can be quite useful. future improvements Removable heavy metal bottom tray. temperature dial. Don't always need it on full heat. I was thinking that this would be good for a roadtrip to reheat food, but directions say not to use while driving. This means that you need to leave the car on while it's reheating. It essence, your car could be running for 30 minutes or longer while you're waiting for the food to heat. Also, trays do not come out for cleaning so you have to use foil. In concept, it sounds good, buy in practice, no. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Enjoy a hot lunch anywhere, anytime by using the Koolatron 12-Volt Lunch Box Stove. The Koolatron 12-Volt Lunch Box delivers what you've been waiting for - a hot lunch while you're on the road without stopping for a questionable roadside meal. You can cook your food at home and bring it with you on the road and to your work site. Cooks or warms food up to 300°F Plugs into your vehicles 12-Volt outlet Enjoy hot meals on the road or at your work site Direct wired for secure connection Easy cord wrap and storage Plug it into any household outlet with the Koolatron AC adapter It does heat up well. That's about it. The cooking trays don't come out for cleaning. They suggest cooking food in an oven bag or line the trays with foil for ease of cleaning. You have to leave your engine running while using it so It won't drain your battery. You can plug it in with an adapter that's not included. Easy cord wrap doesn't work to well either, it wraps around the unit fine then you have big plug that doesn't have a clip on it so it just hand and the cord falls off the easy cord wrap.I thought it would be great to take leftovers to work with me, but if I have to sit in the truck for 20 minutes with my engine running I'm not going to bother. I really like this concept and this product gets some things right, but could be made more functional with a couple tweaks. First, I think the time estimates they provide are pretty far off. We used this to heat up nachos on a boat, and while it did eventually melt the cheese and heat the contents, it took longer than I expected. I thought it would take 10-12 minutes but in reality it took the better part of 25. That's not a big deal once you know how long to estimate, but be prepared for some trial and error. As far as how the nachos turned out, they wound up being a bit soggy. I think that's because there's no vent for moisture to escape. As such, I think this will work much better for things like soup, hot wings, rice bowls, etc. It would also be nice if this lunch box had low/medium/high settings. Sometimes you just want to keep warm food warm for an extended car ride or something, but at 300 degrees you're still actively cooking. Lastly, this lunchbox really needs some sort of indicator light that let's you know when it's heating. With all that said, this lunch box is still great in the right application. We will definitely continue using this on the boat and potentially for tailgates as well, just not with food that will get soggy. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
