Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing cleaner de-glosser As a professional painter we use this product prior to priming and painting kitchen cabinets and wood trim and doors to clean and de-gloss does an amazing job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easier than Sanding or Stripping Glossy Surface I bought the Valspar Bonding Primer to be used on a glossy fireplace mantel. After testing it, I was able to scrap it off even though it said it would work on glossy surfaces. Tried this deglosser out but was unsure due to the reviews. Needless to say, the primer is sticking on the mantel now. I just followed the instructions and wiped the mantel with the gloss off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job, bonding primer adheres after I'm redoing my cabinets and wanted to avoid sanding. When I heard of de-glossers... I had to try it. I first tried EZ Strip. This stuff worked, but was super messy. Scraping it off was not only a mess but was gouging my cabinets. That stuff worked.... but was a pain and likely wasn't saving me any time at all. I may has well just sanded. Then I tried Krud Kutter Gloss off. Now, this stuff doesn't seem to FULLY remove the gloss like EZ Strip was... but it definitely does the job well enough that my bonding primer is adhering. To be extra safe because I don't want to have to do these cabinets twice or be touching them up... I'm lightly sanding the wood before applying Krud Kutter. You can see and feel the difference when it dries. It's cleaning the wood great and does seem to be slightly dulling the surface. It may not take the gloss right off like other products may (EZ Strip), but it's making the surface rough/porous enough to accept primer. So it's good enough for me! This stuff is saving me time with doing a full/thorough sanding and It's passed the scratch test with bonding primer... so we're good to go!

Can this be used to remove old wax before restaining an antique dinning room table?

Asked by: Booker30
Hi Booker30, Yes, our Gloss-Off removes wax from painted or unpainted wood. We still recommend testing on a small area first. Use the product at full strength. Saturate a course, lint-free cloth, and apply to a surface in a circular motion. Fold and re-saturate the cloth frequently. Wipe off with a clean cloth, turning the cloth often to avoid smears. When the clean, deglossed surface is dry to the touch (usually 10 minutes), the new stain can be applied.

Thanks, priming to block old stain is a good point. Does Gloss-Off leave behind a residue that allows paint to adhere better or does it remove old paint material and create a rough surface similar to sanding?

Asked by: BTang
Provided the surface has been wiped down with a damp cloth after Gloss Off has been used, no residue will interfere with paint or primer. Gloss Off does not create a rough surface the way mechanical sanding will.

If I use this, do I still need to use TSP? Will this work on kitchen cabinet doors?

Asked by: Aamer
Yes, TSP is still recommended for cleaning the cabinet doors. The Krud Kutter Gloss-Off will replace a light sanding, but cleaning will still be required.

When used as directed, I see little change in the gloss of the panel, Pickled Oak Kit cab w/varnish. Should I bee seeing a dulling of the finish? (It does look a lot cleaner though). I am about to apply some expensive Water born Alkyd Paint.

Asked by: GeePee
Hi GeePee, You may not see a huge difference in the dulling of the finish. However, the application includes using a coarse, lint-free cloth, and applying to surface in a circular motion to help abrade the surface for maximum adhesion.

Just a suggestion, but some MSDS info and specifications like the amount of sq ft this will do would be helpful. Thx.

Can I use this as the first step in repainting old kitchen cabinets that have a stain (as opposed to a paint)? Since this replaces sanding, can I apply a water-based paint directly after this or do I need to apply a primer before the paint? Thanks.

Asked by: BTang
Yes, Gloss-Off can be used over stained cabinets with a clear coat protecting them. You will not require a primer for adhesion after using Krud Kutter Gloss-Off, but a primer may be useful for stain blocking (so that the old stain does not bleed through the new paint).
