It is easy to move when it is off and even easier when it is on. I like to variable speed self propel feature. The fescue grass in my back yard grew to amazing heights over the winter and by the time it dried out enough to mow it was almost waist high. Mowing it down has been challenging for both myself and the mower. Delighted to report we made it through and are ready for the second pass. I am using the electric start and am delighted with the ease of starting. Took off a star because the mower arrived with the gasoline additive bottle broken - just split across the middle and everything was covered with oil.

The mower is now 2 1/2 years old. After about 2 months they finally fixed the rear wheel problem under warranty. Thank you for that. It is now out of warranty and has a problem where the engine surged and then died. You can restart it.but it dies almost immediately. The shop says they cannot duplicate the problem but when I get it back, I am lucky if it will run 100' before it dies again. This may not be a lawn boy problem but rather a kohler engine (carburetor or governor) problem, but is attached to the lawnboy... I am disappointed has I have owned lawn boys since the early 1970's with great luck.

Overall, I am happy with the mower, however, after 10 months of use, the rear wheel adjustment stud ripped out on the plastic and the wheels dropped. Still waiting to hear from them about warranty repair. Got some hemming and hawing about whether or not it will be covered. I see from other reviewers, this is a problem, with the front adjustment as well. Until Lawnboy does something to resolve this issue, I cannot recommend these mowers to anyone .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Value I could not pass this purchase up. The local Home Depot store had this same unit on sale for $177.00 brand new in box (last years stock)! Got it home put it together and at first glance it seems like a well built unit. Motor fires right up, and runs very smooth. Koehler engines are well known for quality and dependability and is the reason they are found on premium models/brands of lawn mowers. I prefer rear drive which this model has compared to front drives simply because they get better traction especially with a full bag. Several other feature to go into all in all well worth them money and a very good built piece of equipment.

The second season, the mower wouldn't start using the electric start. The starter motor worked fine. The engine wouldn't fire. But it would start if I used the pull-start manually! Oh, and forget the excuse about bad gas. I had trouble starting with gas fresh out of the pump. And I also used the fuel stabilizer as recommended. Well, here I am, beginning season 3 and the mower won't start at all. It won't even fire after a dose of carburetor cleaner. This mower has been a huge disappointment. I will never buy another Lawn Boy for sure.

I have not once started this mower with the pull start, why you ask, because I don't have to. One little turn of the key and it fires right up every time. The motor is powerful while being very quite at the same time. I love the adjustable speed on the self propel drive. The only thing I would add to this mower is the deck wash port. I almost purchased the Honda Electric start self propelled mower for $499 but I passed on it and got the Lawn Boy and I an glad I did. I hope this review might help someone else who is "on the fence" like I was.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lawn Boy The only good thing I can say about this mover is the engine. Mover itself is poorly designed. Self propelled transmission works fine but... Height adjusting mechanism for the rear wheels is too wide and the play (left-right) is too great. Because of that it falls of the metal bracket onto plastic rolls. Rear shaft from the transmission scrapes on the inside of the wheels on both sides. It even blocks them from time to time causing terrible scratching sound. See attached pics. No adjustments can be made since that part is welded that way. Past 30 days. Wasted money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from have to get the key start I've had surgery on both shoulders so I need some thing easier to start than the pull rope. This is my 3rd Lawnboy mower, second key start. It runs real well, I had to raise the mower as high as it would go because the grass was as tall or taller than the mower, but it got the job done. In a few days if it doesn't rain I will lower the mowing deck and mow the whole yard again to even every thing out. I had to clean out the underside a few times as the grass was so tall and wet underside. I have always liked Lawnboy. I'm a 68 year old female with a knee replacement and keep up with the mower very easy.

lawn mower starts but it won't stay on

Mine did this after setting with ethanol gas over the winter. Basically the gas dried up in the carb and froze the float closed. Disassemble the carb. Pull the float pin and work out the float and needle cleaned up the needle and runner it slides in and sprayed carb cleaned in all the passages and put it back together. Starts and runs like a new one again.

Is this engine a 2 cycle or 4 cycle? Does it take regular gas?

Most Kohler mower engines are 4 cycle. However it's best to read th owners manual to be sure. Also i had to replace my mower of 21 years last year an i chose th purchase a Lawnboy mower. And i love it. My best advice is to use only Super Unleaded Gas in lawn mowers. I've gotten great results.

That is unusual for this mower. Let's trouble shoot first CONNECTIONS: 1. make sure you charged it the last time you finished, by plugging it in a. make sure the connections are correct when charging b. check to see that the connector to the key switch has been connected, it may have come out when storing the mower or charging 2. if the above fails, pull the chord. Your mower should start up immediately 3. Don't leave the mower outside during the rain, the contacts may have gotten wet and are shorting out. but once dried, the mower should work properly 4. Highly unlikely, but you may need to replace the battery-(purchase from TORO).

I have had two Lawn Boy mowers. The first lasted 8 years and I have had the new one about 6 months. I take good care of my mower and have had no problems. I too have St Augustine grass and this mower cuts it with ease. It is self propelled and does slow down in heavy grass. I'm tempted to add sheet metal screws to the drive tires and see if that helps. My neighbor has a front wheel drive and it just doesn't work in our grass. Hope this helps.

How much assembly is required on this (or other) self-propelled elec. start lawn mowers?

There was virtually no assembly required for the Lawn Boy. When you open the box, all you need to do is unfold the handle and hand tighten the bolts on each side. No tools are required, the bolts include a heavy duty plastic end that you can turn with your hand. At this point all that you need to do is roll it out of the box, fill the oil that is provided, mix the gas with a fuel additive provided, turn the key and mow.
