Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little saw for the beginner or hobbyist This is my only mitre saw so I can't compare to other models, but it's got some nice features that make it a nice tool for beginners, hobbyists, and small jobs around the house. I found it quick to learn and comfortable to use. Seems to work well enough for a non-professional though a serious craftsperson might want to go with a more professional model. The biggest issue is the tilt: it's very difficult to set it to be exact (or even to be quite vertical - I have to plan my mitre cuts very carefully to work around this). Someone with more experience on a mitre saw might be able to fix this one; I'm still working on it. The stand is a nice feature and works reasonably well for a stationary tool; I ended up replacing it with a folding stand on wheels because I have to move it around every time I used it. Overall, a nice compact little machine for someone who enjoys woodworking but doesn't want to invest in professional-grade tools.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ok Saw - Required Repairs I bought this saw because it was a Makita and the price was good. I just use this saw for doing home repairs. It doesn't get used every day, just here and there when I'm doing some reno's to the home. I've had it for approximately 6 years. A couple years in the laser quit on me but it wasn't a big issue for me so I left it. Last year the electrical in the trigger went on me. Got nothing out of the saw when I pulled the trigger. Had to send it in for repairs which cost me additional eighty bucks. Now the shaft lock won't engage to hold the shaft while I change blades. I don't have a blade on it and when trying to screw the blade on the shaft just spins and there is nothing to grab on to to stop the shaft from spinning so I am currently dead in the water. I pulled the motor off and found that the locking pin had sheared off and I've only changed the blade 3 times. Luckily the part was cheap and I can replace it myself.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I think it is for light job! I used it to cut the 15mm laminate and I felt it was not powerful enough. I returned it to get Ridgid 12" & universal stand just 100$ more but much stronger cut.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but not Makita professional quality This is Makita’s essay at a “home-owner” product. As confirmed by a representative I spoke too at Makita Canada, it is made for them by a third party and is not the same caliber as their other more expensive mitre saws. Does that simply mean a light duty design, or lower manufacturing quality? As it turns out, a bit of both. Starting with the base it is evident this is not the same quality most would expect of Makita. The casting is rough with a lot of flash on the underside but also a bit on top around some of the holes (if you are particular about such things you may want do a quick pass with a file or rasp to clean it up). The turntable itself, unlike most entry level saws, has an extended mitre range of 47deg left-60deg right which is nice, but while you can use the included vertical clamp on either side when doing left mitres, you cannot clamp it on the right side when doing right mitres (the motor interferes). The various common angle stops are reasonably positive employing a tapered steel pin and socket system. While the pin and socket interface is solid with zero play, the mechanism for the pin itself has a tiny bit of play to it which you can "feel", but is very slight and likely of little practical impact. There is no override latch so setting an angle just a hair off of one of the stops may be troublesome. The mitre lock itself is a screw knob which forces a “shoe” against the base resulting in a nice secure lock with no shift as you tighten it down. Disappointing is that the turntable on the first unit I bought was ever so slightly out of line with the base, and the machining of the base was less than perfect. I exchanged it for another which was better in this respect, but not 100% perfect in that when swung all the way to the right a miniscule amount of misalignment is still evident, so this is something which may well vary from unit to unit, and points to a QC issue with the casting and/or machining. Also disappointing is that the kerf plates, while allowing you to adjust the aperture, are sunken into the turntable and thus offer no real support to delicate work pieces (this is unfortunately true of many mitre saws though). The bevel range is 45deg left, and even though this is a single bevel design it will go 5 deg right, but there are no bevel stop other than 0 and 45. The slide action is smooth with no tight spots or roughness, and when wiggled side to side there is only a bare minimum of deflection. The vertical handle is very comfortable with a switch which runs the length of it so a safety button (engaged by your thumb) must be pressed to start it. The start itself is the so called “soft” which for the first instant will give the impression there is something wrong with the motor since it doesn’t “jump” to life like most saws (but in just 1 second it is at full speed). It’s a nice feature for those new to power saws and are intimidated by the sound, but even old hands may appreciate the saw head not jerking on them when they squeeze the switch. The noise level is not bad, slightly less than most skill saws. Many regard lasers a gimmick but for what its worth this one is somewhat usable in that even if it is not exactly at blade edge, it is consistently so and can be counted on for quick rough cuts. Although a depth stop for grove or dado-type cuts is provided, as with almost all mitre saws (even the expensive ones) you cant actually perform such a cut properly, or at least completely. The center of the blade does not reach the fence when pushed all the way forward, resulting in a grove which does not have a constant depth: it will have a rise at the end (conforming to the curve of the blade). Rotating the piece and re-cutting, or attaching an unusually thick wood fence (~1.5”) will be necessary to make such cuts complete. The cuts with the included 40T blade are generally smooth with only slight evidence of vibration plus minute flaking on the exit side of the material. As with any mitre saw adding an MDF face to the fence will go a long way to improving this. It goes through white cedar without even loading the motor. Pine and other framing woods are no problem, neither are hardwoods if a patient had is used. I would expect retrofitting with a decent 60T finish blade will yield proportionally better results. The saw-head itself it quite light, easy to pull down and work through the wood . Even though this LS1017L is not on par with the rest of Makita’s professional tools, it is on the whole a decent, basic saw, suitable for a home owner, DIYer, or enthusiast craftsperson who needs a repeatedly accurate cut, but who isn’t in a rush or needs to do tricky work. The only real fault here is that to inflate the price HomeDepot has elected to sell the bundle SKU of this saw which includes a sturdy, but very basic stand which may or may not be of practical value in that if you want to cut anything with a remainder longer than a couple feet you'll need a roller stand or two. If discarded and replaced with the Ryobi mitre saw stand you end up with a very nice combination. While it doesn’t stand out on its own merits, the Makita LS1017L is virtually alone between the <$200 bottom-end products and the $600+ professional equipment and so, within context, I would recommend this saw but only on-sale as otherwise the price is not commensurate with the value you get. Even though it is of 3rd party manufacture, unlike many department store brands, replacement parts should be readily available from Makita for many many years. If HomeDepot would stock the saw without the stand and drop the price by $120 (the SRP for the stand) they would have a much more compelling offering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AWESOME Great buy, nice and light and compact. I bought a 10inch RIDGID a year and a half ago, i knew i should have bought a slider. Needed one today, had my mind set on the 12 inch RIDGID slider (love their tools) and seen this Makita saw on display. WAY SMALLER than the ridgid, was $50 cheaper plus came with a stand. Didn't even realize Makita tools were on sale this week so i saved another %20. Extremely happy with this saw. Perfect cuts right out of the box like the description says, checked it with a square. Laser needs adjusting though but i don't use laser anyways. Nice solid saw. No play in the slide or positive stops or bevel. Saw bolts to stand which is kind of a pain but still only takes seconds. Leaving saw attached to stand is ok for a permanent location but not for travel. I only attach and finger tighten the front bolts for easy breakdown. Stand has no wheels but brackets to attach wheels if wanted. I am now selling my ridgid 10 inch. Bulky tools are ok for a workshop but i am on a different job every day, so compact is ideal. Long rating short- BUY IT!

Is this the same as the LS1016L which sells for about $500

Asked by: Anonymous
Absolutely not. This is an inferior "home owner/hobby" caliber tool.

Is this saw manufactured by another maker (as the review suggests)?

The above review states it is of "third party manufacture" - is this true, or is the saw made by Makita but for the DIYer or hobbyist? It appears to me from other websites that the dual bevel version of the saw (and in some cases this saw too) is in regular use by tradespeople in the UK and Australia, suggesting that it is in fact a decent and well made Makita saw, although lacks a few of the features of its larger and more powerful brother the LS1016. Interesting that the LS1017 and LS1018 appear to be available in the Commonweath countries but not really very available in the USA - mostly see the LS1016 on American websites!

What is the max. length of cut with this saw & can it be used without the stand? Thanks!

Asked by: Anonymous
Per Makita: 90deg crosscut: 3-5/8" x 12" 45deg mitre: 3-5/8" x 8-1/2" 45deg bevel: 2" x 12" 45deg bevel+mitre: 2" x 7-7/8" You do not have to use it with the included stand, but a proper stand of some sort is required for proper operation of any mitre saw.
