Rated 4 out of 5 by from I love it The saw is grate the only one thing is changing the blade you need tools to do it

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall Happy With Purchase It is my first scroll saw. Overall I am happy with it as it does what I need it to do. One complaint is it takes a bit of time to change the pinned blades. I haven't tried unpinned blades which might be faster but you still need the allen key.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Superb value The only star short of 5 is because the little blower doesn’t do it’s job, but this saw is great value which is what I expected for a makita product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to operate Just completed my first project. Easy to use, change blades.Used thick lumber, needed some patience. I broke two blades the first day, but thereafter plain sailing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for beginner and intermediate After trying a few scroll saws, I settled on this one. It does everything well. Only bad part is you need a tool (which comes with it) to change blades. But it accepts both pinned and plain blades to make everyone happy). The varying speed is awesome, it is also very stable. Unless you plan to make expert's intricate cuts (in which case you should get a more expensive saw), this one will do everything you need.

I see the other scroll saws are 16 inch scroll saws and this is listed as a 5 inch which sounds incredibly small to me. :) How large a piece of wood can I actually use comfortably with this saw?

Asked by: Didi
Almost all scroll saws use 5" blades, either pinned, pinless, or both. Why makita labels this as a 5" is unknown. The normal sizing sysem for scroll saws is the depth between the inside of the "C" shaped frame and the blade (the widest distance you can get from the edge of a piece of wood). As for thickness, most saws can handle up to 1.5" thick, but they might struggle with material that thick. Generally, anything over an inch thick is getting into bandsaw or jigsaw territory. It CAN be cut, but it's not ideal.
