Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Sander I borrowed a sander from a friend to prep my sailboat for painting. Liked it so much that I purchased one online from HD! It runs smoothly and quietly and handles the job quickly. I'd give it five stars, but the hook and loop system on the sander could be a bit more durable, as it wears down on the edges and sanding discs don't stay on as well as they should. I tried high end discs as well as budget ones and it didn't really matter-they fly off.

Most brands of random orbital sanders (ROS) fall prey to one particular flaw. They develop a rough vibration over time (usually 3-6 months) of hard use. The sander part which creates the circular sanding pattern is plastic and wears out and must be replaced. About 4 years ago I switched to 6" ROS. The Rigid was a disappointment, as was the Porter Cable, each developing the vibration problem. I am familiar with Metabo from tools I have previously owned and used, so in spite of the high price I bought it about 3 or 4 years ago. It has developed none of the vibration problems and it is easily the most productive sander I have ever owned. It finishes wood beautifully, ready for stain. Bravo.

A friend has a Festool random orbital sander, which cost him over $450.00, plus the vacuum, another $550.00. This sander works every bit as well as his high priced tool. The aggressive mode really cuts down time when sanding out flaws or snipe from my planer. I could not be happy with this tool.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent 6"/ 6 Hole Sander The Metabo 450 SXE TurboTec is probably the best electric random orbit sander I've used. I knew it was a well made when I put it in my hands. This tool is comfortable in my hands and has very little vibration. It has features no other sanders have. The two different orbits is a welcome addition. For rough, quick sanding, use the 1/4" orbit and for fine sanding, it can be changed to 1/8" orbit. This sander also has variable speed and a booster for an even higher speed. Personally, this booster brings it up to a top speed other sanders have without this switch. This is the first sander I bought with variable speed. I never really saw a need for it, but let's see how well it works. I'll let you know with an addendum to this review if allowed to do so. It also is the weight of an older model Porter Cable 6.5 amp right angle sander, but isn't awkward to use on flat surfaces. The extra weight is a plus because there isn't really a need to push to get the job done. I'm in the middle of a job right now and haven't had the need for power sanding at this point. I do all my sanding before doing the assembly. However, I pulled a fairly rough board of black walnut and sanded it without any problem. This is an outstanding sander and I'm sure it will be with me for a long time.

As a professional woodworker I have tried most of the 5" Random Orbit Sanders out there. They all have two problems which develop with time. The brake wears out, and the vibrating mechanism gets eccentric and begins to sand unevenly. On some models these problems are easily repairable. On others there is just too much difficulty. I just began using the SXE 450 Turbotec 6" last week, so it's too early to tell if it will develop the same problems. But I can say this; this sander is excellent. It is solidly and tightly made. It has adjustablilty as to speed, power, and orbit size. It is heavy enough to need minimal pressure as it sands. I own a shop vac and I had to purchase a universal adapter to get a good transition from my vacuum to the sander. Perhaps the Ridgid vaccum makes the connection better. I don't know. I had the problem of the dust collector provided with the sander shaking off during use. No matter since I use the shop vac. Top ratings. A good buy at a good price for the professional. Home Depot carries several grits in 6" 6-hole hook-and-loop. If these don't offer the grit you want then others are readily available online.
