Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not conforming to the specification I bought a 4" x 8" today and have the lumber staff cut the board for me, and when I get back home and measured it, I found it is not 1/4" thick as stated, its only 3/16 " and is not what I want. Since the board is cut, I am not returning it and just leave it for future use. In the past I have been buying different 1/4" thick boards, white or brown and I cannot remember where but I still have leftovers and all those boards measured 1/4 " thick exactly, not 1/16" less and that is cheating !! Therefore next time, I won't be that stupid and I will certainly bring my own tape measure to ascertain every spec before buying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy cover up I bought this over a month ago and used it to cover old, stained, unpainted and damaged drywall in the garage. The product worked great for this purpose. The sheets are lighter than drywall and did not need further painting after installation. Cutting the boards is not as easy as drywall and generates a lot of very fine sawdust, but this cleaned up easily with shop vac. Very happy with the results. Online ordering and pickup at the store was excellent.

For people that don't know this, all plywood sheets and other sheets are actually in metric measurements (Millimeters) since 1978.. so 3/4" isn't 0.750" it's 0.703" and 1/2" isn't 1/2" but a 2x4 is in SAE and is 1.5"x3.5" lol. If the USA would just switch to metric like the rest of the world everything would be a lot simpler..

Can this be directly painted over, or will it need a primer first?

I would definitely not buy the white hardboard if you just want to paint it. The white hardboard is somewhat glossy and would definitely need to be prepped and primed before painting. Buy the plain hardboard and prime and paint it. You'll save money and work.
