This is an incredibly useful tool for loosening the soil to remove weeds. The sharp edge is effective for some pruning and harvesting. The knife is beautifully crafted, a pleasure to see and hold in the hand. I have only had it a few weeks, so I can't speak to durability, but it seems solidly constructed of high quality materials. So far, it has fully met my needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All around useful The Nisaku 7.25" knife is called a "weeding knife," but my gardener family member used it for planting seedlings. It was just the right width for turning up the soil for the seedling peat plugs to nestle into the dirt. Just enough depth & width, but without turning over too much soil and making a fussy mess. The knife has lots of features elegantly designed into its small size: serrations on one edge, smooth on the other edge; inch markings (see photos) for gauging planting depth; wrist strap; sheath with belt loop. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Treat yourself to a quality tool My previous "hori hori" had a rubber handle and a serrated edge that was not very sharp. I was surprised at what a difference the sharpened edge on this one makes when you plunge the knife into the soil to dig a dandelion or other weed with a tap root -- it really slices through the roots and soil easily. The wooden handle is slotted to hold the blade and has an uncomfortable edge when used with bare hands. My old rubber handled version feels better in my bare hands, but I always use garden gloves when weeding, so this handle is fine. This tool is great for tasks that require a deep plunging action. Some of my gardening friends use a tool like this exclusively for general weeding, but I usually prefer a tool that can be pulled/pushed with a straight wrist because the plunging/scooping action aggravates my carpal tunnel. So far, I haven't had any such problems with this one so I think the sharpened blade must be responsible for the ease of use. Please be careful - the blade is very sharp and could easily cut your hand or glove when cleaning off the blade before you put it back in the holster if you're not careful. The blade is slightly concave, which is great for some tasks, but not for cleaning out weeds in small cracks in the sidewalk. I have used the blade for cutting small branches, but it doesn't replace a good set of pruners. The bright wrist strap makes it easy to find and the stainless steel should protect it even if it accidentally gets left out overnight. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all around garden tool Nice to have one tool that I can carry out to the flower beds. Don't have to carry a bucket load of different things. I've used it to dig out dollar weed (need to get the roots in this stuff), cut the flower stalks on the daylilies after the flowers are done, even sawed through a tree root. Easy to clean afterward, just hose it off. Be careful, though, it is sharp. I wouldn't suggest playing around with the blade, it comes very sharp. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for weeding in tight beds and dividing plants This sharp tool is the right thing for weeding in an area that is packed with plants, and for dividing plants. I used it to remove tall grasses that were trying to invade a bed of Loriope. This knife is like a cross between a dandelion digger and a trowel, only way sharper. So I was able to surgically remove the weeds and their roots, while taking a minimal amount of the Loriope. I found that it was best to remove the metal eyelet that was screwed into the handle's end to hold the red lanyard, because I needed to be able to push on the end, and the metal eyelet made that uncomfortable. It unscrewed easliy, and I think that I will tie the lanyard on through the hole in the handle, because that red color makes it easy to find. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably the best gardening tool I have now Prior to owning this my thoughts on a weeding knife were that of a dull spade. This knife has changed the game on weeds. For starters, the knife has two different sides, a very sharp cutting side and an equally as sharp serrated side. The cutting side was way sharper than I had expected it to be and was even sharper than some of the pocket folding knives I've received in the past. The serrated side was easily able to cut through a half inch root in a few quick strokes with very little pressure. The knife comes with a leather sheathe with a button clasp and a belt loop so you can have this at your side, but not exposed to the sharp edges. I am very pleased with this and I hope that it will keep it's edge fora long time. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
