Rated 5 out of 5 by from excited We bought 10 bags when they were on sale.(They do not provide free machine even we bought 10 bags. Instead, we paid around 60 dollars to rent it). The staff in the Home Depot Tool Department was very friendly and knowledgeable. He helped us lift the heavy machine and all the bags into our car. The process was really simple and easy. We made thickness from R20 to R60. Just as the Home Depot staff said that "you will feel the difference". Yes! We can feel it right away and do not need to wear winter coat at home anymore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use The most difficult part about using this product was actually getting it to my home. 20 bags and the machine take up a lot of space. I ended up having to rent a home depot van and was able to take it all in one shot. Otherwise, I would have had to make four trips with the SUV. The machine that is used to spray the insulation worked quite well. From start to finish i was done in 2 hrs... plus another 30 minutes for set-up and clean-up. The hose that came with the machine was about 50 feet and it sprays about 7-10 feet so there were no issue with having the machine outside on the main level and traveling the hose up two stories into the attic and reaching the back of the house. There is a remote attached to the end of the hose that will tell the machine to start and stop... most times it stopped and started on the first press of the botton. A couple times when trying to stop it I wouldn't respond. Depends how many walls are between you and the machine probably... reception was probably reduced. No big issues. The noise level was minimal on the hose side. The machine isn't too loud but may be a bit much after 2 hours for the person sliding the bagged insulation into it. Ear protectors might be a wise idea. Overall, very satisfied with the product, machine and outcome. Very easy to use. I sprayed between 45R to 55R throughout the attic. At the back of my house I probably only had about 10R - 20R of insulation (brutal that some builders would miss that). I noticed a difference with cool air retention on my upper floor within a few hours after installing the insulation. Big difference. I only assume I'll save some $$ on the air con and heating bills long-term. One note - More of a hassle than putting the insulation in was setting up the attic with the rafter vents. It saved a ton of time installing the rafter vents prior to blowing the insulation in order to avoid having your insulation fall onto the soffits. Low cost but did add to the prep time over all... this took me about an hour to take care of for an attic which covers approx. 1,000 sq ft.

After shopping around I found the Home Depot pricing for their AttiCat insulation to be most competitive. Especially when you add in the fact that the rental of the equipment for blowing-in the insulation was FREE. And it was so easy to use. The rental agent at the store was very helpful and using the machine was a snap. Saved me lots of money!

I had some 4 inch of wood chips, top up until around R 60 and almost instantaneously changes! We have now a -24 outside and on top floor is warmer than bottom. Rent a machine from Home Depot for 4 hours, put 10 packs in 1,5 hours .I am amazed with the results!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works with a few caveats FIberglass is basiclly fiberglass. Get the cheapest you can to cover. The OC stuff is no different. Plus is the free 24 hr blower rental when you buy 10 or more (a coupon that the rental desk has has to be scanned to get free rental). Pretty easy to blow though getting the hose straight and ready to pull through may be difficult if you don't have the space to straighten it first. About 100' of length which I needed despite proximity to attic hatch. Go early and get enough of the depth guides. Also make sure all openings through the vapour barrier (light fixtures, vents, etc.) are sealed. Pretty easy to blow the insulation. Didn't suffer any blockages using 40 bags. The trouble is with splitting the bags. You have to cut deep or it is difficult to break into halves. Blade on the blower to cut the bags open may not be sharp so you may have to cut a starter slit. Block may not feed into the hopper smoothly so you may have to give it a nudge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast & Easy I recently use this product for my attic about 950 SF uses 13 bags and only took less than 1 and half hour. i use the machine outside the front door and the hose was long enough to travel up two story to my attic. The only down side is that you must have a big truck or van if you need to buy more than 10 bags.

I need to top up the insulation in only a couple of spots in the attic. Can this be installed by hand?

No, you need the blower machine, the insulation only expands as it mixes with the blown air. You need the machine to make it expand.

Can this product also be used between studs to improve R-value of exterior walls or improve sound-proofing interior walls? If so, in a finished wall how large of a hole is required to blow in insulation?

I don’t believe so. When I have removed drywall from jobs after wall cavities have been filled by blowing insulation in I have found blockages due to electrical wires or other obstructions

Can I use this to insulate my cathedral ceilings??

Yes you can use this to insulate a cathedral ceiling. Assuming you are in Canada, the following things are important: - you need an air space under the roof deck. Atticat fluffs up a lot, so you will need an air baffle to ensure a continuous opening under the roof deck from the low eave to the upper end, where it must be vented - as required by code. See https://www.homedepot.ca/product/owens-corning-raft-r-mate-attic-rafter-vents-rigid-extruded-polystyrene/1000503435 for such a product. I stapled this to the underside of the plywood roof deck using 1/2" T50 staples in an air stapler. - you also need an airtight 6mil polyethylene vapour barrier on the warm side, ie just above the ceiling finish (usually drywall) - as required by code - to prevent moist inside air from moving through the insulation and condensing. I used 5/16 T50 staples to secure the poly to the bottom of the trusses. I then used the blue sheathing tape for the joints. d - I nailed 1x4 wood strapping @ 16" on centers to screw the drywall to. - What is DIFFERENT is that every 6 to 8' up the roof I left a 32" space (ie temporarily omitted one row of strapping) for access, leaving the poly hanging vertically, - On a ladder, the atticat hose can easily fill the void between the topside of the poly and the underside of the rafter vents for the 6 to 8 feet of one width of 102" poly - After the void was filled, I stapled the poly into place, sealed it to the next row of poly and nailed in the strapping using an air nailer. - I then moved 'up' the ceiling to the next access row and repeated the process. - for the last row, instead of completing the entire row before stapling and strapping, I stapled and strapped after about 8' of the access opening, blowing the space full before continuing along the access line. - When I had only about a person-sized-hole into the insulation space, I taped the poly up, leaving only a hose sized hole. I then filled that last piece while slowly removing the hose completely filling the void, thus completing the insulation project. - Note that the vapour barrier must be continuous - sealed around pipes, lights, wiring, etc. Good luck, tedious and time consuming but doing it right … The Atticat is the least of the work.

Bout how far with the insulation be blown? How close do I need to get to the edge of the house?

It blows a good 6-8 from the hose.  So no need to crawl into the corners.  Great product and with knowledge of proper venting before you start, this product is easy to install.

I want to insulate the attic over my unheated garage. 1. Can I use Attic Cat without having a vapour barrier in the ceiling? 2. Does anyone use rafter vents? Seems like blowing insulation would clog up the soffits

You will lose heat without the vapor barrier. But yes you can use it. Vents are good, I use rigid foam to fill the gap between the vent and top plate so that insulation doesn't get out to soffit, useless out there

Can I use this product in the attic of a vaulted ceiling? The ceiling pitch is 2:12. Will it stay in place or just slide down?
