Rated 1 out of 5 by from R20 Eco Insulation STINKS We bought this to put in our Cathedral ceiling at our cottage. While installing it we noticed a terrible smell. Some people say it smells like burnt cookies but its way worse. We have to leave all the windows open just to be in that cottage now. I have contact Owens Corning weeks ago, filed my complaint with documents and pictures as they requested, and they haven't even responded back. They told me on the initial call that it was the binding agent of the ECO insulation causing the smell and it would disappear after a few weeks. I can certainly tell you its been over 4 weeks and we cannot stand it. Don't buy this stuff.

After putting all the insulation in we took a coffee break before installing vapour barrier. We were startled to find the room smelling like something was burning. Checked all electrical boxes and areas where wires were running, plus the attic. Then I read the info on the EcoTouch that says it might smell like burnt sugar. Red faced, I put up vapour barrier and smell was reduced. eventually it went completely.

I would AVOID THIS PRODUCT at all costs. Go with something else. It is not worth the time , effort or stress if you get a stinky batt.

will it stay in position if installed in a ceiling

Hello roddy, when installing insulation in floor/ceiling applications the use of wire ties may be needed. It is recommended to use wire ties every 18-24 inches to ensure the batts stay in place. Thank you for your inquiry!

Can I add 1" foam board in order to increase the R value to the 2x4 cavity and then install this ?

I cut R5 styrofoam to fit tight inbetween the studs, then I strap the face of the studs with 3/4" (or 1") plywood. This gives you the 3 1/2" required for the batt insulation.

My new fiberglass smells like burnt coffee or burnt sugar

There are times an odor can occur after the curing process. This will typically dissipate over time, and adding air flow over the product plus introducing a dehumidifier can help clear the odor as well. Would this product be good to reduce sound in a basement suite? As of right now it has no insulation so it transfers noise VERY easily.

Can I install 3.5 insulation batts in 2 inch space

Yes you can, compressing the insulation will reduce its R value but if all you have is 2.5" of space then your R value is limited anyway. R value is a ratio of material thickness to its thermal displacement, so you wont get a R12 but you don't really have another option. It sounds like your insulating a 2x2 framed basement, I usually just rip the batts in half and put them in.
