Jam nuts are tightened against each other instead of against a material. They are often used when a nut needs to be locked into place without clamping against another object. They are about half of the size of a regular nut. Zinc plated for moderate protection against rust.
Hex Nuts are used for fastening to a hex head cap screw or bolt when mechanically joining materials together. Made from alloy steel. Use stainless steel where corrorsion is and rust is of concern or in exterior applications. Best for general hardware use or where high strength is not required
Made from medium carbon steel, tempered and zinc plated. Best for areas where high strength is desired. Similar in strength to SAE Grade 5.

Hot dipped galvanized finish provides one of the highest degree of corrosion resistance when compared to a steel zinc finish. Use grade 2 hex nuts with grade 2 hex head cap screws or hex bolts.
