Rated 2 out of 5 by from DON'T BUY THIS. Buy adjustable version Save yourself a TON of headache and spend a few dollars more on the adjustable version. This one is almost impossible to get straight and level, no matter how much you try and compensate as you install it. Other reviews online mention about how hard it is to get level, but the bigger problem is actually that it *twists* as you hammer it into the ground as well. So you end up with a bunch of fence posts that are both tilted and twisted. Important to note, though: buying the adjustable version of this solves ALL of the described issues. It is a much, much less frustrating product to work with, and worth the extra few dollars.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not recommended I installed 6 of these yesterday based on the recommendation of HD staff for a fence. Both ends of the fence were lagged into very solid, secure points however it wasn't good enough. The fence spans 6, 8' sections and is very wobbly. In addition, the bolts used to tighten the sheath around the 4x4 become longer as you tighten it and eventually become too long for the ratchet to tighten them anymore. Similarly, the bolt in the center of the sheath (which allows for squaring and leveling the post) is too close to the base of the sheath and doesn't allow a ratchet to grip on 100% in order to tighten it 100%. Fortunately, the fence is only framed at this point however, I'm taking it down, and starting over. Back to cement and Sonotube. :(

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good and quick follow the instructions provided. a shorter post a couple of inches past the collar works best for pounding them in. when using them for a fence take into consideration the wind, an angle brace every second one may be needed. much cheaper than using concrete (one 12 foot 4x4 cut in half makes two 6' fence posts), but is not as solid.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great for a quick fix Need to repair a fence quickly then this works great. You will be sacrificing straightness, strength and durability though. Lasted 2 years before a wind gust snapped the metal spike from the base on 2 out of 10. Fence was never straight using these. Ended up replacing with proper posts in concrete after.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made product and gets the work done! I used it to replace a rotten fence and did not want to mess around with concrete. This thing went in the ground using a sledge hammer like a charm. After tightening a bolts it is rock solid! It is a well thought of product and I am happy with my work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Time and Frustration Saver! These ground stakes we’re fantastic for a play structure that I built. I’m very glad that I spent the extra money to get these adjustable ones, since hammering them in perfectly straight can be a real challenge. They are easily adjustable - the only complaint is that the hex bolt head should be slightly taller; that would give more space to slide a wrench into the slot. In my application, fitting the wrench in to tighten that bolt was a challenge because the 4x4 post sits on the head of that bolt and doesn’t allow much clearance to get the wrench in underneath that post. Much easier to hammer these posts in if you have a short piece of 4x4 to hammer onto, with a sledge or the back of an axe. The end result of my project was a sturdy structure with 8’ high 4x4 posts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked as expected I used the spikes for the posts on my above ground pool solar cover reel, and they have worked perfectly. I had a very hard time trying to keep them straight as I hammered them in. For my application perfectly straight wasn't a big deal, but in other applications it would be. Not too sure how to deal with that. As well, make sure you have a scrap piece of 4x4x8" around that you can put in the post and pound it into the ground.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice and stable! Exactly what we were looking for. We used these to stabilize our bird feeding stations. They are very sturdy and were fairly easy to hammer in with a wood block and rubber mallet.

Will this 36” spike hold if I drive it through asphalt? asphalt is probably 4-6” thick

Asked by: Mark
I'm sure it would hold if you can get it through but I suspect that you won't be able to. I suggest you break a hole through first.

I am considering using one of these to put a 6.5-7 foot 4x4 post with a private parking sign on it. Will this suffice?

Asked by: Walter
This should do the job. I use a pair with 4x4s to support an 8’ x 6’ trellis / fence panel.

Would these work to hold 4x4 posts to build an 8' tall pergola?

Asked by: Sac1980
My instinct says they would be fine, however it would depend on the spacing between the posts. I think that you would need to contact the manufacturer to get their recommendations on spacing.

Can I secure the spike to my post FIRST and then drive the post with attached spike into the ground? I am able to dig post holes that are about 26 inches in depth but the frost line is lower than that. So the idea would be to extend the depth of the post.

Asked by: jasonius
I did what you are trying to do, just 12" down. It worked great, but i did do a concrete base in the 12" hole just in case. my ground is very rocky so i used a scrap 4x4 to hammer the post into the ground. it took a big beating. you could attach and hammer, but know you might damage the post. Post and mount survived the winter find. Still level.
