Selection in store has shrunk so much during the Covid virus period. The home we purchased has fixtures in a long hallway back entrance that require this size of bulb. LED bulbs would use less energy, but the lowest were too bright, and these bulbs get little use where they were needed. Was happy to locate them online with Home Depot and so convenient with quick home delivery.

What are the differences between soft white, daylight, and bright white?

An eye doctor advised my 92-year-old father to use brighter lights at home. What kinds of light would you suggest for general lighting and for reading?

If you are looking for brighter light, use the highest wattage that the fixture can support (in CFL energy saving it would be a 23W). As for colour temperature, the brightest would be the Daylight (6500K).

Soft White is 2700K - similar colour to an incandescent producing a yellowish light. Bright White is 5000K - producing a very bright white light Daylight is 6500K - producing a bluish white light

Can all spiral be used outdoors or are they for indoor use only

Will the cold weather affect the life of the bulb as well as its use

They can be used outside provided that they will NOT be exposed to water. The cold will not affect the life of the bulb, however will affect the start up time. CFLs take much longer to come to full brightness in the negative degree temperatures.
