Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally an affordable 100W-equivalent LED We've been using three of these in bedside lamps for a few months now. So far they seem reliable. (More reliable than an expensive CREE alternative.) These provide light that is roughly the same warm colour as that from a standard 100W incandescent lamp, which is perfect for a bedroom when you're trying to be sleepy. They do not seem to render reds quite as richly as the incandescent bulbs they replaced (presumably a higher CRI lamp would do better), but likely you would not notice this if you weren't looking for it, and they work fine for reading, etc. Also, they don't cast as much light downward as a classic A19-shaped bulb does. Instead it's out of the sides and top. But it's worth the trade-off to be using 14.5W of power instead of 100W, while still getting the same amount of light. These lamps are priced a lot lower than many competing 100W equivalent LEDs, but this reflects their lower lifespan (and the fact they're not dimmable). It's a good trade-off. When these burn out in 10,000 hours, there will be something better to replace them with anyway, so I'm happy they're less expensive and have a shorter life.

Can it be used inside a 'globe' type fixture?

Caution on bulb: "NOT FOR USE IN TOTALLY ENCLOSED LUMINAIRES" (this caution in not printed on the box). I want to use this in my bathroom light fixture which has a glass 'globe' but uncertain about this caution. Normally used a 100 watt incandescent bulb in the fixture. Image provided. Approximate outer dimensions of the 'globe' (actually somewhat cube shaped): 5.5 x 4 x 4 inches / 14 x 10 x 10 cm. Probably more relevant is the globe interior volume of 1.2 liters. I suspect many people may not read the caution printed on the bulb and don't know what a luminaire is.
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it can be used in this application. Totally enclosed luminaire refers to a fixture that has no air movement. The type of fixture you are talking about will have air movement to allow any heat to disipate.
