The screen is large but it folds down for easy access to fireplace. Very happy with results. Changing firewood to dry and seasoned birch is likely the best solution.

Do the panels it only fold in one direction. Or do the hinges fold both ways (forward and backwards)

The panels only go one way.  When straight out, the panels stop and can only be folded back to their original position

How wide are the central and side panels? If you drew a straight line connecting the 2 inside edges of the side panels, and a line perpinducular from that line to the front of the central panel, how far would it have to be for the screen to be stable?
