Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Stuff I bought 1 bag and tried it out today. We are fixing an old concrete basement. After reading the reviews I decided to only mix up small amounts at a time. This worked perfectly. I mixed up about 4 trowel fulls with some water until I got the correct consistency. (I watched a few videos so I understood what I was looking for). I applied it, then mixed up some more. Once I was ready to put on the next batch the first batch had partly set up. It was very easy to work with and I did not find that it set up too fast. Just make sure you don't mix up too much at a time and you'll be fine. I am going to go buy a few more bags to complete the project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product Absolutely I love & recommend this product! Very easy to work with although you must work fast as possible as it does harden quickly especially in warm weather or if you add warm water! You can use their additive product called 'Flow Control' if you need more time or a more liquid form, is great too! I not only use it for repairs around my house but crafts as well! One great thing is if you do run into to trouble, the good people from RapidSet are happy to help you out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stone Wall Mortar Used the mortar to build a stone wall . Attached the mortar to concrete cinder blocks and then attached field stones to the wall and mortar . Used a common trowel bought at Home Depot to work the mortar into cracks . Bought from Home Depot a mixer and an orange pail Mixed small portion at a time as the rocks need to set before adding more stones . The set up time was quick. Was very happy with the product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Curly Stone Works great for Culture Stone / Stone Veneer. I tried several others products with no success and was getting really frustrated. Choose the right material for the job ( my Dad's wisdom echoing in my ear)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mortar Mix I had good results using it as a skim cover to some rough cast concrete, working in 10^C and setting in <5^C.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use. This product is easy to mix and to apply. Holds well to vertical surfaces. I recommend only mixing half of the bag at a time if you are not a pro. It took me a while to get the hang of it and the first batch was starting to stiffen up. You could add a trickle more water if this happens but I found it easier to manage smaller batches.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to mix and use I had to do some repointing of a stone wall due to frost heave cracking the initial mortar. The product was very easy to use. My only feedback is that it sets with a very, bright white tone, so if you need to match darker mortar then you will need to figure out some sort of coloring to tone it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product. Smooth Finish. Very easy to work with but sets up quick! I would recommend mixing half the bag with 5qt of water before pouring in the other half of the bag with it to mix. You can also buy small packets to extend set up time or make it easier to work with.

Can I use this to make rocks for painting? How long do I need it to cure before painting with acrylic paint?

Asked by: tenai
This is exactly what I use this mortar mix for and it works great. It hardens pretty fast so you can demold after about an hour. I let my art stones cure for a few days after demolding to make sure all the moisture has evaporated before I use acrylic paints. I've been using this mortar mix for a few years now :)

i just need small amount Mortar Mix for the project, if I use a cup for measurement, how many cups mortar mix for 1 cup water? thanks.

Asked by: Jeff
Thank you for your inquiry. We do not recommend mixing less than the whole bag of material. In order to have a mix that is representative of the properties maintained on the product data sheet, mixing he whole bag is required.

Can this product be used to repair an old interior foundation wall made of stone and limestone?

Asked by: Paris
Thank you for your inquiry. This material should not be used to repair a stone foundation wall. You should be looking for a speciality material at a Masonry supplier for a softer mortar. Something like King Masoncare 300 may be suitable depending on the wall structure.

I need to remove/repair damaged mortar in between irregular-shaped (blue)stones set on a concrete base on my outdoor patio. Will this product be suitable for this purpose?

Asked by: JohnOP
Thank you for reaching out with your inquiry. Your inquiry is about a specific brand and product for which a response has been suggested already. Based on the limited information provided it is understood you have a mortar between tiles outdoor that is need of repair. You may follow the other suggestions (your choice) Keep in mind Canada has various temperatures seasonally. A suggestion is to use a mortar of lesser strength than the tile to provide a bond break weaker than the tile - otherwise the tile may crack if the repair mortar is a higher strength. Also to use a mortar type suitable for horizontal on grade applications. One suggestion is to use SAKRETE Mortar Mix, Type S. I have concrete patio steps (above cellar). A crack has formed at the base of the bottom step about 1-2” wide across the 6’ length of the step. I plan in using this Mortar Mix with flow control to fill the crack. Is it a good product for this purpose?

Asked by: MS006
Mortar mix with flow control can be an effective solution for fixing cracks in concrete, including those found in patio steps. The flow control feature provides a more controlled application, which is beneficial for crack repair. However, a 1-2 inch wide crack requires some additional considerations. Firstly, you need to clean the area thoroughly, removing any loose concrete or debris. You might need to use a chisel and hammer for any larger pieces, and ensure the area is clean and dry before applying any filler. Prior to filling the crack, apply a concrete bonding adhesive to help the new mortar adhere to the old concrete. If the crack is particularly deep, you might need to use a backer rod, which is a flexible foam that aids in filling the crack. Once the preparatory steps are done, you can then apply the mortar mix. Use a trowel to press it into the crack and smooth it out. Proper curing of the mortar is crucial, which might involve spraying it with water several times a day for a few days or covering it with plastic to keep it moist. This process helps the mortar to reach maximum strength. However, if this crack is indicative of a more serious structural problem such as building settling or shifting, it's recommended to consult a professional. The mortar mix repair is essentially a patch and might not resolve any underlying issues causing the crack.

Can I use this Mortar Mix to parge a concrete foundation wall? (I am wondering it it's a type S mortar mix). I like the sand color of the mix, otherwise I would have to add cement color to a gray mix.

Asked by: wern70
I think that that you would be better to tint parging mix. Mortar is stickier and won't float as easily in my opinion.

Can i use this to build up concrete floor an 1 1/4" and lay tile on it?

Asked by: Craig
I'm not sure about the specific product - brand name - you are inquiring about. Mortar mix is available in different mix designs for specific applications..--- the product that is designed for your specific project is SAKRETE Sand Mix - topping and bedding mix.--- here is the products technical information.------SAKRETE Sand Mix topping and bedding mix is a pre-blended, ready-to-use mixture of Portland cement and well-graded, natural sand. It is designed for new concrete construction projects, concrete overlays and repairs where a thickness of 2 inches (5 cm) or less is required. Can be finished smooth by trowel or textured using a broom or brush. Can be opened to foot traffic in 24 hours. Meets or exceeds strength requirements ASTM C 387 strength requirements. FEATURES & BENEFITS • General purpose applications • Ready-to-use; just add water USES Ideal for thin applications from 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) to 2 inches (5 cm) in thickness. Use for overlaying concrete repairs, filling cracks in concrete, parging and as a base for shower stalls. Can also be used as a bedding mix or joint grout for flagstone, slate, brick walkways and patios. PROCEDURES Mix and substrate temperatures should be maintained between 5 ºC and 30 ºC (40 ºF and 86 ºF) for at least 24 hours prior to and 48 hours after. Surface Preparation: New construction: Prepare the area as required for the project. Repairs: Surfaces to be repaired must be sound and clean. Remove all delaminated or unsound concrete by chipping with a hammer and chisel or using a stiff wire brush. Clean the area to be repaired with potable water, leaving the concrete saturated but free of standing water. Some very porous concretes may require several applications of water to ensure complete saturation. If required, construct forms around the old sidewalk or slab. Use a level to ensure the forms are set at the correct height and there is adequate slope for water drainage For best results, apply SAKRETE Concrete Adhesive to the existing dampened substrate before pouring. Mixing: Empty contents of bag into mortar box, wheelbarrow or mechanical mixer. When mixing by hand form a crater for adding water. Add approximately 4 L (4.25 qts) of clean water per 30 KG (66 lb) bag or enough to achieve a workable mix. Avoid a soupy mix. Excess water reduces strength and durability and can cause cracking. In cold weather, use warm water to accelerate the set. In hot weather, use cold water to slow the set. Placing: After mixing, place and consolidate inside the area. Level, moving a straight-edged board in a sawing motion across SAKRETE Sand Mix, removing any excess and filling low areas. Allow freshly placed material to set or until the surface bleed water evapourates before finishing. Time will vary with weather conditions. Finishing: After bleed water evapourates, finish as desired. It is recommended to use a wood, magnesium or aluminum float trowel for a smooth surface. For a textured surface use a broom or brush. Use an edger tool to fi nish edges. Finishing cementitious materials too early, or over-working the materials can cause dusting, cracking, scaling and a weak surface. NOTE: Stress control joints are placed to control where slabs crack, along a pre-determined path. Use either a hand jointer while the mix is soft or saw cut 6 to 18 hours after hardening. The joint should be 1/5 of the full thickness of the slab and every 8 ft (2.4 m) in both directions. Adjust down for appearances (centering). Should the repair overlay be placed over an existing concrete joint or break, it is important to tool a joint into the soft mix over the existing joint or break. Use a jointer tool to form a joint half the depth of the repair. FILLING CRACKS After mixing, work the SAKRETE Sand Mix into the crack with a rod or stick then level the surface with a straight edge. Finish as desired. CURING Curing means maintaining proper moisture and temperature. Allow newly placed material to set until surface is hard to the touch. SAKRETE Sand Mix will set in approximately 6 hours. Then keep material damp or cover with plastic to prevent evaporation of mix water for at least three (3) days. Protect from freezing for at least 24 hours. Can be opened to foot traffic in 24 hours. TECHNICAL DATA Compressive Strength: 3 Day 15 MPa (2175 psi) 7 Day 20 MPa (2900 psi) 28 Day 35 MPa (5000 psi) Meets or exceeds strength requirements of ASTM C 387 when used as directed. PAINTING Concrete must be fully cured (approximately 28 days) and dry before painting. Refer to paint manufacturer directions for application instructions. YIELD 30 KG (66 lb) yields approximately 0.014 m³ (1/2 ft³). A slab 12 ft² (1.1 m²) at 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) thickness requires 30 KG (66 lb). I will be putting a layer of Rapid Set Mortar mix on my patio to even it out and fill the cracks (1/4 to 1" wide) (I'll put layer of concrete adhesive before I put Rapid Set Mortar) Will it crack in the winter from cold weather alone? (southern Ontario)

Asked by: MS006
I would recommend using the cement all to repair the cracks. Cement All product can be applied from 0-4" in thickness and holds up extremely well. You can then do an overlay with the mortar mix on your patio to even it out. Both of these products hold up extremely well in freeze thaw cycles, and against sulfate attacks. Thank you for choosing Rapid Set!
