Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's a Long Term Thing Too soon to give this 5 stars but the unit is operating well. So the question is, would you pay more to have a hybrid electric tank water heater? Depends on what you want. We live on a small farm in a northern climate and we replaced an oil fired water heater. We like the idea of not burning oil to take a shower. We want to save money on overall energy cost through energy efficiency. We also want a unit that can work well either on electric mains or solar panels or both so we can be more independent from energy supply and environmental issues. And the only way to see a cost benefit seems to be in a unit that is built to last. First impressions. It is well built, installed easily with an additional power line from our breaker panel and some minor water piping which we had done by local contractors. It's relatively quiet when the heat pump is on and silent when it isn't. It took about 24 hours to stabilize temperature and it's been good to go with no problems. The unit has a touch screen that allows you to select operation. It also has wifi so you can control it from your phone. We haven't, but it would be handy to use if you went on vacation and wanted to reduce power, or you're coming home and you want hot water when you get there. We are using the default setting which it seems draws AC current for heating but uses a heat pump to keep water hot. You can set it to all thermal electric or all heat pump. We're still figuring out what we need. Our unit is situated in our basement which is heated. A heat pump is the reverse of your refrigerator. It scavenges heat from the air to heat water and exhausts cold air. It also acts as a dehumidifier. Many people duct the cold exhaust outside and we piped water exhaust to a sump. For now we're letting it scavenge oil furnace heat in the basement and plan to duct the cold exhaust into a "cold room" where we store dry food and some storage produce. We'll see how it acts in the summer, but we think we can run it on hybrid only and use it to heat water, cool the cold room and dehumidify the basement. Some of this review is still my own speculation. The air filter is top mounted and easy to get to for cleaning or replacement. The drain looks big enough to make effective regular flushing and cleaning possible. Both are important for efficiency and long life (which is how this unit can pay for itself). Performance wise this unit is just as effective as any electric, gas or otherwise tank equipped water heater. I looked at tankless units and found that the high demand for electric current would make it less useful with solar panels we plan to install. While natural gas/propane are relatively cheaper now, they are either not available or totally dependent on supply/cost of delivery in the long term. Pros and Cons are subjective, your mileage may vary. But the 10 year warranty makes our plan a fair bet. We also qualified for a $1000. energy rebate which more than covered tax, delivery, electric and installation. So far I give this a solid thumbs up and I like the chance it gives us toward efficiency, using about 20% less oil, using more clean energy and saving money on hot water long term.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Recent Install Installed one of two units a few weeks ago. It took me a bit of work to understand the app setup and functionality. The unit works as expected. As well as heating water, it is a mini air-conditioner and dehumidifier the extent of which is somewhat dependent on how much hot water is used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rheem Hybrid Hot Water Heater Great product from Rheem. Pricey in Canada and wish it was more in line with American pricing at Home Depots in Maine. After all aren't we suppose to be supporting green technologies? Love being able to put it in vacation mode. But not having much luck getting the phone app to work yet.

So, you pipe the intake air in and exhaust air out from/to the outside? Because otherwise you would be cannibalizing your own heat. Am i right Rheem? Thanks,

Asked by: Cdesmazes
No.   Exhaust is your choice, but in the summer inside to cool your home.    Then it depends on the climate you are in.   In Canad It might be best if you can run the exhaust directly into your furnace then you can leave it there year round, consider condensation issues if it is not close to the furnace.   If you heat w electricity then change the programing on the unit for the heating season to work more like electeic heater.    You CAN NOT use freezing outside air in the winter for the intake.

How do I find out the average power consumption and/or operating cost for this model? Most appliances like a fridge have an energuide sticker so do these have something like that?

Asked by: Jeff
Depends more on how much hot water a house uses but we are saving one dollar per day compared to the year before we installed it. (family of two)

Would this be acceptable for radiant floor heating and home use?

Asked by: Nuro
That's not what it's intended for; it's made and sold for potable hot water. But, I don't see why it would not work for heating, in principle at least. A lot would depend on the size of the home, how cold it gets, and whether the radiant heating is the primary source. I doubt it could heat a really big home in a cold climate. Here in Southern BC it probably would heat a smaller home. The tank would efficiently supply hot water up to its heatpump capability, then could be adjusted to switch over to standard resistance heating (or both) if more heat were needed. It's very efficient in heat pump mode, but the recovery time is very long, compared to when it uses its resistance heaters. In non-heatpump mode it's just an ordinary electric water heater. I'd also be concerned about the warranty for non-intended use. As a heater for potable water it's fantastic, as it runs in our home for only about 2.25 kWh a day, for two retired people. This is probably 1/3 to 1/4 what we would pay to run a regular water heater.
