Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quiet Very quiet and efficient compared to a previous HPWH it's replacing. Make sure you have a 30A circuit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High efficiency Rheem water heater The tank is fantastic however Home Depot uses a delivery company called Sameday that doesn’t understand that a hot water tank with a heat pump needs to be transported standing up not lying down in a truck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Energy Efficient! Serves a large family well I bought this water heater through a special order (happy to see it's available as a regular online order now!) a few months ago. It's been up and running for 3 months now and using the Econet app I can see that I've used 370 kWh in that time to heat water. If I add in the electricity used to heat the house during that time (~4 COP) ground source heat pump, then I double that to 740 kWh, still only costing me just over $25/month (Ontario off-peak all in cost including tax) to run. My old natural gas water heater was running at about $40/month including the monthly gas charge, so I do save a few dollars per month with the unit vs gas. If you're on electric resistance water heating, you'll save a fortune if you have efficient space heating. If you are on electric resistance heating, it'll cost you more money during the heating season than just electric resistance water heating, if you run the heat pump, but you can put it in electric resistance only mode during that time. I am expecting the summer savings to be even greater when this unit will also double as a partial dehumidifier and AC in the basement. We have a few teenagers in the house and a number of kids and have rarely run low on hot water (there were times our gas heater couldn't keep up either). I run it on heat pump only mode, however when we do need a boost, I turn it to the Energy Saver Mode that also uses the electric elements and then we have plenty of hot water for all - I've actually only used this setting twice in 3 months. The app makes it easy to change settings. A draw back of the app would be that on the unit itself you can see what temperature the water in the unit is at, but in the app that is not possible. Installation was straight forward, although you will need a drain nearby to drain the condensation from the heat pump. The unit needs a 30 A breaker to power the electric elements, but the heat pump draws only about 400 W per hour. Overall I am very satisfied with this unit and would recommend it to anyone looking to replace an electric resistance water heater or looking to electrify and move away from natural gas.

Would this tank provide enough capacity to use it with hot water air handler?

    Asked by: OlegG
It depends on the capacity. Each water heater is guaranteed to deliver hot water at a certain rate (gallons per minute). You'd have to find out how much your hot water air handler needs. Further, I would call Rheem and ask them what GPM the water heater is guaranteed to deliver on purely "heat pump" mode which is the most energy efficient. You can get higher GPM with higher modes but they are less energy efficient.

Since the price of the 65 gallon and 80 gallon capacity units are almost the same, what additional advantage can I get using the 80 gallon capacity aside from the number of users. only 2 out of the 5 bedrooms of our house is being used on winter.

    Asked by: gina
The benefit of the larger tank is that it helps mitigate the slower recharge times when the tank is in ECO or heat pump mode. With the larger capacity available more water can be used without running out of hot however if you anticipate heavy water usage the tank can be switched to high demand mode. This mode might be the one needed if you only get the 60 gallon tank. Keep in mind that the warmer the room air is around the tank the quicker the recharge times will be if the tank is run in heat pump or ECO mode. If your tank is in a cool basement (like mine is) it takes a long time to bring 80 gallons back up to temp after heavy use so I run mine in high demand which uses both the heat pump and the elements. It is working well and I am still saving a considerable amount on power once the water is up to temp as the heat pump can maintain it no problem.

What is the actual model number of the water heater being sold here? There are six possible Rheem products that could match the description: PROPH80 T2 RH350 D, XE80T10HD50U1, XE80T10H45U0, XE80T10HS45U0, PROPH80 T2 RH375-SO, PROPH80 T2 RH375-30.

Would this be worthwhile to purchase if my house is heated by electric baseboard heating? It would be installed in a utility closet so I’d have to exhaust the air outside

    Asked by: Doug
If you have baseboard heating, the efficiency during the heating season would be less than that of a straight electric water heater. During the summer, when no heating is active, you would get the full benefits of the energy efficiency of this unit. It has a COP of about 3.7, so for every kWh of electricity used, it moves 3.7 kWh of heat from the surrounding air into the water in the heater. If that outside heat is provided by baseboard heat (approx COP of 1), you're using 4.7 kWh of electricity in total to heat the water, rather than the 3.7 kWh of electricity you would use if it was straight electric resistance heating (approx. 27% more electrcity than electric resistance using the heat pump with baseboard heat). Venting outside is more detremental to efficiency than allowing it to vent into the house. My original idea was to vent outside, however an engineer who builds super efficient homes mentioned to me that any air pushed out of the house will be replaced (since you're creating negative pressure inside the home). The air that comes in, during winter will be a lot colder than if you just allowed the water heat to circulate air within the home.

Hi: I am interested in the Rheem Hybrid model of electric water heater. My question is whether I can use any of these models in a closed loop heating system. One customer review stated it cannot be used for both domestic hot water AND a closed loop.

    Asked by: Garry
Good for floor heating, not enough temperature for baseboard if use heatpump mode only.

I should have been clearer .. I am in BC Canada. The answer below to Norah says this item relates to Rheem Model PROPH80 T2 RH350 DCB. The rebate list also shows PROPH80 T2 RH350 D and PROPH80 T2 RH350 D15. What is the difference?
