Rated 1 out of 5 by from Rheem Water Heater and horrible Customer Service. I own a Heating and Air Conditioning Business and I purchased this for a Customers house. After the installation and tank full of water it would not ignite. The Vapour Sensor was faulty right from the get go. No big deal just run to Home Depot where I bout it and get a new sensor right??? WRONG! Home Depot does not even carry parts for it and were completely useless in helping me. They literally have zero clue about the products they sell. I had to travel an hour outta town to a Distributer that had them in stock and paid $75 out of my pocket to get a new one for the customer cause unlike Home Depot I won't leave my Customers hanging without hot water when they buy a BRAND NEW unit from me. Get you act together HD not impressed.

They refused to adjust the gas line to fit the new tank, instead bent it over to fit the new connection location, stressing the gas line at its threaded joint above in a way that looks like may eventually split! they refuse to correct it and refuse to have a different installer come to inspect it. Do not use their installers! In response to my concerns and request for it’s correction, they simply say they stand by their installers. This was after paying approximate $700 just for the install portion of the purchase.

Was told be Rheem 3 weeks for the part, called around the city-only one company stocks parts-Emco - no stock at least 3 weeks called home depot asked if I could take a part off a tank that they had in stock-No End result went and purchased a John wood tank and was up and running the same day So what good it the warranty if you have to wait 3 weeks

He was not able to get thru on 1-800 service number. Why wouldnt they have designated number for service companies. Hot water tank still not working.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be careful of this water heater! This was installed by a great company under contract by Home Depot. The unit installed worked great, lots of hot water and heated up quickly. I wasn't aware of some of the features, now I wish I was because I probably wouldn't have purchased it. Apparently this model and maybe other models have sensors. I always think of this things like automobile "thing" that they add on, sensors, power this, power that...just things to go wrong. So apparently the sensor in question is questionable on reliability. After 6 months it started shutting down, seriously I thought this is what we are trying to avoid, the problem of a malfunctioning heater. So it started to flash 7 times then pause, then 7 times, then pause etc. Apparently the problem is "Flammable vapor sensor lockout" due to something that will catch fire. Nothing has changed in the room, I've left the door open to ensure air movement but still going into this state. Now the kick in the , rear pants, apparently Rheem has decided to not cover this part under warranty! The sensor has a history of failing so what do they do, not warranty and the owner is on the tab. All we wanted was a hot water heater, it didn't need sensors (like power windows on a car, power locks etc.) we just wanted a water heater that we could count on. Now Rheem wants customers to contact them first before any warranty work is performed so they can say "nay or yah" not what I call good customer service. The manual doesn't give instructions on how to reset the unit!!! What the "devils home"? I haven't contacted them yet as considering all our options at this point. But having to reset the water heater 4 or more times a day to keep hot water is extremely frustrating!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perforrmance Platinum 12 Year Natural Gas Tank Just had Home Depot install this tank (previously had a 12 year Home Depot tank that lasted 17 years before it started to leak). Their installation contractor did a superb job. The plumber was fast, courteous, friendly, and knowledgeable. I'm an HVAC technician and I have a natural gas license. He installed it exactly the way I wanted. Could not have done it better myself. The tank is very good and the efficiency is high enough that, when it is running, I can hold onto the C-Venting on top of the tank for 2-3 seconds without discomfort (the lower the outlet temperature the more heat is being taken out of each cubic foot of natural gas and absorbed by the water). I am extremely pleased with the new tank and the installation. LW - Coquitlam, B.C.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Built but wrong description on HD website. Newly installed (7 days ago), so reliability is unknown at this time. However, first impressions is that this unit is well built. The control unit is Honeywell with simple on/off switch making operation simple (no pilot to light) as the control unit sparks the igniter when flame is needed which can be view easily through the viewing window. The control unit has a single light that flashes a various number of times to show unit is either functional or has one of about 30 different error conditions. When heating for the first time (tank full of cold water) I received a flame error numerous times causing lock-out each time. Turning unit off and then on unlocks the unit. But once the water was heated this error condition did not reoccur, so all is good after 1.5 hours of babysitting the tank. Rheem Model: XG50S12DM40C0 (C0 = Can?, U0 = USA?) ...use Rheem website to get more accurate description. But be aware that the discription on Home Depot site is very WRONG as follows: 1) Unit is 40,000BTU ...not 50,000BTU per HD website 2) Unit absolutly REQUIRES a 120V/15Amp grounded electrical outlet with in 19feet of top of tank to power the 24 volt power damper. No electrical power to open the vent damper....no operation thus NO hot water! 3) Unit is Energy Star rated, but I have doubts that the EF rating (.67) may be lower (.61?)...but not sure. So overall, after a week, this seems to be a good unit if you have electcial nearby and don't need a quick re-heat (refresh) rate that an extra 10,000BTU would provide. Construction seems good and unit is easy to operate. Canada warantee 12 years parts, 1 year labour (USA gets 3 years labor).

No urgency on Rheem's part to send replacement parts. It takes over a week to get parts and numerous followup phone calls to confirm they were shipped.

My new Rheem Performance Platnium 40 gal gas water heater make very loud rumbling noise each time it starts to fire up the gas to heat the water. Is this normal? It has done this since day one. Is something wrong with the burner?

Hi Felix. Thanks for reaching out. Sorry for the long winded answer below. Here are some possible reasons/solutions. A service provider can also help in trouble shooting the problem. Rumbling, pounding and other noises when the heater is in operation are usually caused by formation of scale and sediment. Minerals will form a scale on the bottom of the inner tank that traps minute amounts of moisture. Heat from the gas burner changes these tiny trapped amounts of moisture to steam and the pressures developed cause the rumbling and pounding noises. In addition to being very annoying to the homeowner, accumulation of sediment and mineral deposits in the bottom of the tank can appreciably shorten the tank life.Diagnosed early, these sediments may be flushed out simply by periodically draining the tank. Banging Baffles. The baffle is an engineer designed component of the heater and is essential to the heater’s efficiency rating. On occasion, the baffle will make a noise like banging metal to metal. This is exactly what is happening. The baffle is ‘wiggling’ around in the hanger bracket and making noise by banging against the side of the flue tube. This is a normal noise and can be removed by bending the metal tabs on the hanger bracket to tighten the baffle. Another method is to remove the baffle and bend it slightly; then reinstall the baffle. The idea is to make a snug fit back into the flue tube.

I have two questions.  The first is fairly simple, I am presuming that this unit can simply replace an atmospheric unit so long as there is a 120v outlet available for the damper/ignition?

Yes it requires a 120 volt outlet to plug in the plug in transformer. which powers the damper and ignition. I've used the unit now for more than a Year, and it has performed without any problems. the only con is; as the gas turns on it makes a bit of a rumble, which does not bother me, as it indicates that the unit is operating properly.

I understand it comes with a power transformer, so the unit itself is not using 110V AC straight. Can someone check what the output voltage / amperage of the transformer is (i.e. something like 110AC -> 12V DC 1A). Thanks!

We had this unit installed on Dec 18-18. Today with no other usage before or during, we ran out of hot water while someone took a shower lasting at most 25 to 30 minutes. Is that what we should expect from the unit?

I have exactly the same water heater. It was installed 4 months ago. We have not had an issue with running out of hot water even while showering while the washer is running. However we would rarely shower for more than 20 minutes and we are using low flow shower heads.
