Rated 1 out of 5 by from Design Change I bought this sander based on the positive reviews. My friend has one, and it operates very nicely. I believe that the positive reviewers have had a good experience with their products. I suggest that there have been some short cuts taken in production that make this tool less desirable than it used to be. Right out of box, the belt system vibrates. Channel lock pliers are required to remove the nut that holds the assembly in place. This is due to poorly machined, and toleranced parts. Specifically the hold down nut and spindle threads. I was impressed with the smooth operation of the one I saw in action at my friends shop. The one I have is not near as good. As another reviewer said. : Design Change. Too bad. I was really looking forward to a positive ownership experience.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from This product is excellent. The biggest drawback is that the stores do not carry replacement sanding drums. The product is useless without them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The One Tool To Have If You Only Have One I purchased this Spindle Sander a few years ago and it has proven to be one of the best, if not the best, tool I have ever purchased. Ever had a project completed only to feel that it just does not look right? Well I have. I have build tons of things that I could never get shaped quite right to fit the image I have of the finished product. Once I got my spindle sander I found I was able to actually get those curves I was looking for, I was able to get the smooth finish which had illuded me so many times in the past. I have high praise for this product. It is very well constructed, easy to use and occupies a very promenant place in my workshop. Do yourself a favour, buy one. You won't regret it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Lack of replacement sleeves limits tool I really like this sander, the 12 x 24 belt is great. However the lack of replacement sleeves does limit it's usefullness. Perhaps some information as to which product's sleeves to substitute would be a good idea.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Had it for years.. use it a lot. I think I've had this for about 10 years (Maybe more). I can't imagine not having it. Rock solid, never had a problem with it, and it gets a lot of use. The only issue I have had is the nut that tightens the spindle down comes loose during heavy use, but that was easy enough to fix with a little blue locktite. The original drum paper lasted a long time before they wore out. I've gone through far more belts than drum paper. Dust collection is pretty good. With a vacuum it gets 85-90% of dust. with a dust collector and a second hose by the wide end of the drum it gets 98%. I have it on it's own wheeled cabinet, so I can store all the different grit belts underneath. If it ever breaks I would not hesitate to buy another one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Outil bien pensé, mais pas solide Cette sableuse était chaudement recommandée par la revue Fine Woodworking.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Belt was shaking wildly - Returned it right away I bought this unit mainly for the belt sanding feature but was very disappointed by the fact it shakes a lot when reaching the high limit of the oscillation. Didn't even bother to use it once, I simply returned it right away. I also wished there would have been a way to disengage the oscillating feature to have a fixed belt sander. I also found the unit to be bigger than necessary. It takes a lot of space. The tool didn't feel very solid overall. I see a lot of woodworker using this tool on Youtube and I honestly don't understand why people like it so much. Maybe because there is not much competition. Anyway, I was not impressed and I am happy that Home Depot refunded me without asking any questions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I had bought it sooner. This is a great addition to any woodworking shop. The unit is lightweight but sturdy. I have a small shop so i use a rolling cart for tools like this. Set up is easy, dust collection is about average but definitely better than no dust collection at all. I have had it for few months and have used it on multiple projects. It will bring your projects to the next level by adding details that would normally take hours sanding by hand. If you are looking at spindle sanders I would put this at the top of your list just for its versatility alone.

I'm thinking of mounting this in a flip-top table, so the machine would spend some of the time upside down; will the bits and pieces all fall out? Or will the table (when tilted all the way down) hold everything in place? Thanks!

Asked by: Bob S
Not a good idea. Too many bits and pieces rely upon unit being placed on a flat surface.

Would this (used as a belt sander) be able to flatten the bottom of a small box (4"), perpendicular to one side of the box? Or are the capstans at either end going to slightly round off the box at the edges? I need a flat area for glue up.

Asked by: handyguy
you should be able to do that if you carful and do not put too much pressure on at the edges. do not use a real  aggressive belt.

an someone tell me if you can work the belt sander without the oscillating action? Also, is the spindle motor adjustable if ever the squareness is off in relation to the table?

Asked by: WeQuick Productions
no it's not operating without the oscillating. my spindle is dead on square with the table. I don't believe it is adjustable ,may be if you take it apart and check .

Is there a way to turn off the oscillating function? When I sand tabs off some laminated particle boards, the sander chips the laminate on the face.

Asked by: Person A
Hi -Person A, Thanks for reaching out to us. There is not a direct way to turn off the oscillating part to this spindle sander. If you require a product that does not have this feature we would suggest to review our other sanding options. For a full selection of options available please visit www.ryobitools.ca or contact 1-800-525-2579. Thanks, RYOBI Canada team.

I need new sanding sleeves for the existing spindle drums. I went to the store and they said they didn't have them, call Ridgid. How? Does anyone have a part number or a supplier where I can get these sleeves? My machine has sat idle for weeks now.. thx!

Asked by: Big Guy
If you still have the manual that came with your machine all the parts numbers you need for it including for the sleeves of your spindle drum. Will be the manual that came with it.

how do you change from belt to spindle sanding on the eb 4424

--bought this machine used without a manual
Asked by: Anonymous
The answer which suggests to loosen the orange nut at the top of the spindle is correct, but you should also probably also know that this nut is reverse-threaded. Turn it clockwise to remove it.

What sanding belt do I use?

Asked by: Larry
It takes a 4” X 24” belt.  I recommend the Mirka abranet belts. 80 or 100 grit work best. Not cheap but last and cut fast.  https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/supplies/sanding/belts/111346-mirka-abranet-max-4-24-belts
