Rated 4 out of 5 by from did what it was supposed to We were covering up some old 70s vinyl tile and needed to fill in the embossing first, this did the trick. It was pretty easy to use, though we had better luck with our very elaborate embossing using a large putty knife than a trowel. Also it didn't cover nearly as much as advertised. If your embossing is more than fake grout, you might want to pick up an extra tub.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product Reviewer "Ethereal" must either have gotten a bad batch or expected this to be a self-leveling product, which it makes no claim to be. It is the consistency of soft, creamy peanut butter (i.e, peanut butter when spread onto a piece of hot toast). It is meant to be applied as a skim coat using a trowel. As an embossing leveler, it is designed to fill the very subtle nooks and crannies of embossed vinyl tiles or sheet vinyl. It is also excellent for filing the shallow faux-grout grid of tiles whose edges are chamfered to give the impression of grout. I am a DIY-er, and have laid tiles 2 or 3 times in 30 years — so I'm not an expert. This product applied easily straight from the can. As per the instructions, any ridges left by the trowel can be easily "knocked down" after about 1 hour by scraping with a wallpaper scraper or the edge of a trowel -- so your troweling technique doesn't need to be expert. It is best to do this within about an hour, as it sets up quite hard over several hours and is much easier to scrape flat before it is fully cured.. It can also be applied in 2 or 3 thin coats to fill larger voids. One of the tiles of my underlayment had a loose corner and could not be made to stick. So I made a diagonal cut a few inches back from the loose corner, and I removed that section only (the remainder of the tile was soundly adhered). I then filled the void with a succession of three thin coats, letting each dry fully. When fully cured (overnight), it was very hard, level with the surrounding tiles, and well-adhered. Although it claims coverage of ~144 sq feet/quart, I got about 2/3 that — probably because my underlayment tiles had chamfered "faux-grout" edges which needed to be filled, in addition to leveling the embossed texture. Unlike other products, which must be bought in large quantities, this comes in affordable quart size ideal for single-room projects. The fact that it is ready-to use straight from the can avoids the mess and bother of mixing dry ingredients with expensive additives. And yes, clean-up is simple with soap and water. Highly recommended.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor. Far too thick and dry to do the job. Spread unevenly, clogged the trowel edge repeatedly leaving streaks. Had to sand back, and then found areas it never floated into in the first place. Then spent more time redoing those areas with 50/50 thinned mixture, which worked quite well. Lost three days of schedule.

Is this product paintable with a garage floor paint?

Asked by: Scott
Thank you for your inquiry. The 1800 Embossing Leveler is not recommended for this type of installation (garage floor) and have not tested to paint over it. A cement-based leveler would be best recommended for this type of application. If you have any further questions please call our Customer Service (866) 435-8665. Thank you for your interest in our product.

Can this product be smoothed out while applying?

It sounds like too much of a process to trowel it on, then go back later and smooth out the trowel lines. Would it be possible to trowel it on, then smooth it over at the same time?
Asked by: Justlinda1952
Certainly - if your troweling technique is good. Mine isn't, particularly, and I tend to leave slight ridges that often are more prominent than the subtle peaks and valleys of the embossing I am leveling. As the application instructions suggest, it is simple to remove any troweling ridges by scraping with the edge of the trowel or a wallpaper scraper once the product has set-up for about an hour. But the product itself is easy to apply, so if your application technique is good, you won't have to bother with touch-up (scrape-down, actually).
