This is a very reasonably priced product compared to other underlayments offered, but this vapor shield is a silicone-coated PAPER product. The title is somewhat deceptive because they call it silicone but leave out the paper part. It is not very strong and is prone to ripping unless you tread with care. Walking on it is just fine, but be careful about twisting your foot or those kinds of things. It is a vapor shield only and provides no cushioning or acoustic attenuation. I didn't measure it with my micrometer but I would estimate its thickness to be about 8 to 10 mils. The manufacturer states they use 6-mil paper which means that it is about twice the thickness of typical 20-pound copier or printer paper which usually runs about 3 mils.

Rolled it out before laying laminate planks. I used a plank to hold each end otherwise it would roll back together again. Instructions says to staple it to the wall to prevent that from happening but using a plank worked fine for me. You can also use painters tape as well. Beware that the instructions do say to overlap the barrier by 8 inches. Take that into consideration when calculating how many square footage is needed. My biggest advice is to make sure your subfloor is clean without any debris. Otherwise it will rip a hole in the barrier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from best ever! I do not usually bother taking the time to write a review of products. H however I am making an exception in this case. I have used felt, red paper, and just about any other underlayment you can stick under Hardwood. this is by far the best. it is dimensionally stable, allows the wood to slide easily making joints between the wood easier to get tight. It is dimensionally stable unlike polyethylene plastic underlayment. I found it very easy to use. I highly recommend it. I just bought out the last stock of my local Home Depot because it looks like they put it on clearance. I hope I will still be able to get it for future jobs. the only reason it would be on clearance is because people do not realize how good it really is.

It does have a tendency to bunch up and wrinkle. Somehow when we rolled it out and stapled it, it was smooth, but by the time we got to it with the flooring it had expanded and gotten wrinkles.

Very nice product and very easy to work with so the product did meet our expectations. No problems thus far with laying it down before installing hardwood floors. The manufacturer of our hardwood flooring recommended this product in their installation instructions so that's what we went with. Fortunately, our local Home Depot had plenty in stock so no need to purchase them online.

I've used this before in other rooms and it is easy to put down and works like a charm. Best used with laminate that has a pad. If you don't want spongy thickness like other types, this is great! With this, the laminate is like having real hardwood floors. The only reason I gave it four stars is because it can be torn easily if you're not careful. I learned this quickly. Other than that, it's great and not too expensive like the other types that can be used. Happy flooring!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Product This was so easy to use nothing else out there that compares to it. It made installation super fast because you could slide the planks across it. I would highly recommend to use this product and its environmentally friendly too!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Purchased a year ago for $17 and now it's $98 Can't believe how much the price has increased in a year. It's very cheap paper and rips easily. No need to the price increase. Will not buy again.

I have a very small, low traffic area with a 1/4" low spot. Can this product be layered to even out the leveling?
Asked by: WinterShedMan
This barrier is very thin and used only as a moisture barrier. It will not level an uneven floor even an eighth of an inch.

Can this product be used for other household purposes (e.g., wooden countertop temporary protection)? Thanks

Asked by: telflehtak
I dripped sweat on the paper when installing flooring and it immediately saturated. Is not water proof and not real tough. Another idea, when I installed tub and sinks, I cleaned the surface well and lined with contact paper then covered with scrap cardboard. Great protection for low cost.

Can I use this in a crawl space? I am replacing the insulation under my crawl space and wanted to know if i can use this to cover my new insulation.

Asked by: Fonso
This is the wrong product for this application. This product is made as a sort of "subfloor"for laminated flooring to "float" on,it is a vapor barrier of sorts but what you want is a roll of insulation cover made for that purpose (I believe the proper product is much cheaper too.)
