Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Product on The Market for Sound/Fireproofing Roxul Safe'n'sound is made from natural and recycled materials. It is fire resistant due to it's high melting temperature (1177°C). Does not rot, promote mildew, fungus, or bacteria. This is a great product and an easy DIY job that anyone can do. Tools required for the job are a serrated bread knife it works better than a utility knife, measuring tape, long sleeve clothing and a dust mask. Although it is not advertised it does have and R value of 11. Dwight Simpson - Simpson Properties

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product I had to redo the base of the wll of the shed of an old house that I bought since the baseplate, the bottom of the studs, the floor bolts and the fiberglass insulation had all rotted. So I used pre-treated wood for the new baseplate and the bottoms of the studs that I had to repair/replace. But, for me, an important part was the insulation. I read that this product is waterproof so it won't be affected by any moisture or water seepage that gets into it. So far, so good. If things go the way I'm told they will, I'll be back in a few decades for the update. I trust that it'll have been worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective Sound proofing I recently completed a basement renovation and used safe and sound along with resiliant channel to strap the drywall ceiling. My customer was shocked at how quiet their basement is now. I trully hope they never have the oppertunity to the fire suppression!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from soundproof This product is so easy to use and cuts down on noise dramaticly, the added fire safety is comforting and none of the fibres flying around like fibre glass insulation make it easy to use. My son plays guitar and loves the quiteness of his room now..

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basement Reno Working on finishing my basement. Purchased this based on other reviews as I want to dampen the noise when people are walking above. Have not finished the reno yet but so far it is easy to work with and you can cut it with a bread knife. I got it during the lockdown and have to say that Home Depot has the curbside pick up down to a science. Ordered it, got a notice less then an hour later that it was ready and went to get it. Parking lot is well organized and it makes picking it up a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dampens sounds really well. Installed this in my basement ceiling. Noise no longer carries throughout the house both upstairs and down. Makes for more peaceful days and especially nights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would like to see R rating Great product which is easy to work with. I would like to see an R rating placed on this product even though it is designed for sound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's okay for sound insulation Don't. Expect this product totally isolate sound transmission coz it does not. It tends to filter sound on higher frequency but muffle lower frequency. It is stillbetter than nothing, I have use it on all my interior walls and ceilings. It suppose to work with resilient channel and thicker drywall for best results. But then its more cost for slight gain. Despite Roxul don't published Rvalue, it is of the same material of regular insulation but denser and heavier to give it the better sound and fire protection. It's Rvalue should be R12 base on thickness. Compare to pink or yellow fiberglass, this does not sag or compressed much and retain the shape. The big bonus is it does not promote mold even wet. I have got rid of all the pink insulation when renovating.

Can this be placed loose above a drop ceiling to reduce noise?

Asked by: Mom5
Note that Rockwool have no specific product or testing with drop ceilings. In theory you could lay the batts across the grid to add some sound dampening but note the grid must be strong enough to hold the weight of the batts

Does this product release harmful materials into the air? I'm thinking of stuffing in a floor joist in the ceiling in my laundry room. I wont be able to completely seal it in and it will be open to the air with a furnace nearby. Is this an issue?

Asked by: Bob150
No this is better to be Sealed for a sound barrier , the sound your looking to remove from floor joists will still come through if it is not totally sealed, the seal is 3 layers ,outer layers and core of insulation in your case would be only 2 floor and core since you won’t be covering it , NO …. I wouldn’t recommend leaving it uncovered it’s not good to breath it in . It’s purpose is to serve as a Dense cavity filler …….. :)

Can this be installed in a 2x3 framed wall? or does it have to be 2x4?

Asked by: Daniel
I would say yes. Although I put it between the floor joists (which were 2x8) in a basement ceiling I did notice it was not as thick as the regular thermal insulation that is normally used with 2x4 studs.

Sound proofing and R value

I want the sound proofing benefits of safensound but need R value because I am renovating my detached garage for a sound studio. What do you suggest? Thank you, Bill
Asked by: Anonymous
ROXUL Safe'n'Sound is an interior sound insulation which is not rated for its R-value as it is for interoir applications.ROXUL ComfortBatt and Safe'n'Sound are made similarly but with slight changes and will have similar charactertics but each excel for its designed application. For exterior walls, you require to install a R-valued insulation like ROXUL ComfortBatt which will be branded showing the R-value and be assured, it will absorb sound as well.

Would this also work with 2x3 plywood studs?

Asked by: Bunter
I suppose it would work, however it would be condensed into a tighter space. It may affect the vapour barrier & wall covering, etc. The product is rather thick, and not as easily compressed as regular pink insulation.

What is the thermal resistance ("R") value on this product?

Asked by: christy
Hi Christy Safe 'n' Sound is designed for interior partitions where no R-value is required. As such Roxul does not track this number. If your application requires an R-value, such as an exterior wall or attic, then it is recommended to use Flexibatt. I hope this helps.
