The Riverstone Industries Line of 4 ft wide commercial landscaping all weather ground covering rolls designed to offer easy to use, PROFESSIONALLY used and requested 3.2 oz. thick black woven polypropylene fabric with pot lines that are 12 inches apart for easy line-up. The material is designed to left water flow through the fabric while preventing weeds, rocks or animals from coming through. This fabric carries a 20 year warranty.

Do I need to use mulch on top of this fabric to protect it from he sun, or can it be left uncovered? The problem with mulch is that it decays into soil and weeds start growing on top of landscaping fabric which defeats the purpose.

Anything left in direct sunlight will become dry an brittle. I'm using mine as lawn cover for winter due to the city throwing street dirt (rocks, sand, salt etc...) so in spring easy clean with broom or water hose then srored for next year. So I'm unsure what you want to use it for. There are probably different material for your usage. Good luck.

Is the product a wire mesh covered in other material? I ask as mice and squirrels can chew thru lots of materials.

No there is no wire mesh.  For my use it worked extremely well and I was very happy with the product.
