Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool for the money Perfect addition to home shop. Nice heavy base made of cast for great stability

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good tool, the finish of the tool could be better The machine performs well and while not the best tool in the world, it's good enough for what I do with it. My only complaint would be with the finish of the tool. There are sharp edges and a specific screw is sticking out and I have scratched my hand on it a few times already: when the belt is vertical, somewhere above power switch, there's something screwed from underneath the tool's casing and the end of the screw sticks out the top and it creates a hazard. I haven't looked at what it holds and if it could be smoothed with a file but it's a thing Ryobi should fix. Also, this tool when it sits on a bench top or on a table, is hard to pick up. A handle or at the very least, holes for hands would have been a nice touch. It's a heavy tool and since my shop isn't that big, I have to move tools around. This one is more difficult to move than it should.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Sander I have put of few miles on my sander. It was good for the first 20 hrs or so, but after using it for an extended time it lost power and can not do the job. Not happy with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy Ryobi tools they are the worst! I bought a Ryobi belt sander 2 years ago and it broke after 1 and a half years of use. I brought it in for repair under warranty over 3 months ago and it will probably be at least another month yet. When I contacted Ryobi about my ridiculous wait they just told me that it is normal to wait this long and that there was nothing they would do about it. Ryobi doesn't care one bit about their customers and the tool didn't even work that good in the first place. The motor bogs down very easily and it doesn't track well at all.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Fraudulent advertising and scamming tool staff The sander works well, based on a few sessions' use. The 1-star review is for deceptive and fraudulent advertising and store policy. Notice that in the ad on this page, and the entire product box, there is no information about the type of sanding disc. Hook and lock? Sticky? Floor drum? Obviously, such a large "oversight" is deliberate. The HD staff sold me an incompatible disc, and they do not even stock a replacement at the location. They engage in practices like this to steal from customers. Home Depot should be ashamed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tool, but some weak plastic parts... I love Ryobi and I really like this unit. It replaced another I had which was all metal but shook like a 1980's school bus when in use. This one is surprisingly heavy and stable considering the amount of plastic it's made of. That's the only down-side though. I don't have a dedicated space so I have to lift it on to my bench when I need it, and I feel like the plastic can't handle the weight when lifted. A small peice already snapped off. Great unit, but keep that in mind if it doesn't have a dedicated space.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not amazing but not terrible for the price point Its okay for light work and small to medium jobs, but I wouldn't have this running constant for more than an hour or so, If that. After maybe 20-30 mins use you can feel the heat radiating off of the gear box. The main issue i have is that the belt runs against the right side no matter what you do, even after moving it the belt slides to that same spot once turned on. So I reccomend having an extra belt or two in whatever grit you use most on hand just in case. Annoying for sure but can be overlooked if you only need a few minutes use out of it at a time. There's a guard you're supposed to install over the belt and when you do its either too tight and keeps the belt and disc from spinning or, the belt runs against it so you're sanding a metal plate aswell as your piece of stock.. Instructions are also terrible, not helpful in the least. I put it together by following the picture on the box and have an extra piece i don't even know what to do with so heres hoping its not important.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Solid sander, but lots of dust expected For years I have turned the (hand) belt sander upside down in a vise for a variety of sanding jobs. This sander promises a bigger, and adjustable sanding surface. The 4" wide sanding surface fits the bill. The sanding belt can be set between horizontal and vertical (set by an screw) but the you can't adjust the screw above ~45 degrees if the black guard/rest is installed. The dust port is 2 1/2" OD, so there was some McGyvering to adapt it to the central vac. The sander throws a fair amount of dust.

Which is the better buy- Ryobi belt and disc wander or General International belt and disc sander? Thanks.

Asked by: James
The Ryobi is the better purchase. With Ryobi being Home Depot’s biggest brand it will most likely have the better warranty than the General International. Also, Ive bough the Ryobi version after my previous one broke, and it has had no issues.

How square/reliable is the table for the disc sander portion? With another budget-friendlier brand the table would drift down and out-of-square with the disc no matter how hard I torqued the knob. Will this one stay square?

Asked by: Bob S
My table is fine, however, the issue I have is the rotating disc is slightly off camber. Therefore, it "wobbles" on it's axis and can't produce a perfectly square sanding plane. I think at this price point expectations need to be low and if you need more precision, that come's at a higher price point. But you could open the box at the store and inspect the item before buying just to make sure.

Can we sharp knives with this belt sander by using fine grit blet?

Asked by: Waqas
Although a knife sharpener would be preferable to perform this task, I think it would be possible if you were to ensure that a 20 degree angle is set for step one (rough) and a 15 degree angle (step 2) is set for the finishing stage. As well you would need to ensure that light pressure would be applied to the blade to avoid overheating and discoloration of the metal. Hope this answers your question.

Can this be used with wood AND metal?

Asked by: CWas
It can be used for both it just depends on the belts you use, aluminum oxide is a good belt for both. I however don't recommend buying this belt sander because mine broke after only a year and I finally got my new one and it didn't even get through a days work before the drive belt was torn to shreds.
