Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap and works but finicky This is probably the cheapest plunge router you will be able to get. It has a lot of power and can run large 1/2" collet bits. Router has a easy to access button to lock the collet so you can tighten or loosen it with the provided wrench. It has a pretty sturdy build for its body and feels very tough. The cheapness of the router does come at a cost, primarily for the plunge function and the depth lock. The plunge is not smooth at all and you will have to give it a very large push for it to reach the deeper depths and you'll have to try multiple times to get it at the right spot. The depth lock is very risky as you have to make sure you are locking it down REALLY tight to make sure your bit doesn't come back up. However, if you continually use the depth lock, the lock itself becomes loose and looser which makes you have to tighten it more and more, leading to a vicious cycle. The alignment of the router is also not perfect out of the box. I had to sand off some plastic on the straight edge of the router base as the black plastic crept past the metal straight edge and would throw off cuts very slightly. If you need a powerful router to work on pieces that do not cost lots of money, this will get the job done. But if you are unable to accept the risk of it potentially destroying your work do not get this. If you need to reproduce certain precise depths do not get this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stupid design I bought this recently hoping to use it on and off the ryobi router table. It doesnt work well in either scenarios because the router doesnt plunge deep enough. Most smaller router bits like the ryobi set when installed correctly will barely protrude through the plate if at all. Medium and larger bits will stick out more but rarely will you be able to expose the full bit, usually i can only use half the height of a router bit. This problem gets worse when you put it in the router table as the plate gets thicker. The second problem I have is the springs are way too strong. It takes significant downwards pressure to make the router bottom out. This feature makes height adjustments in the table very awkward because you will be lifting the whole table. I wish i would have spent a little more and bought a router that works for its intended purpose.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well, but could be better quality The product itself works exactly as it should. Lots of power, easily moved between the shank sizes with the enclosed collect. The problem is in the quality of assembly. The height lock mechanism popped out the very first time I used it, the screw for it flying off to Murphy's graveyard. It fits back on and turns, but having a better locking system would be a priority for an upgrade. As well, I fit it to a router table (also ryobi) and took the springs off the "plunge" system for easier use. The guide rods that ensure verticle accuracy quickly started sticking. A little lube eased it, but better seals on those guide rods would also be considered for Ryobi's next upgrade. Again, it works exactly as it should, but the little things that make it easier to use aren't there.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy!!! Do not purchase this tool if you value the wood you’re working on! This is hands down the worst quality tool I have ever owned. I wish I had listened to the other negative reviews. After just a few uses the depth lock began failing, causing me to gouge several expensive pieces of wood. The next day the plunge mechanism seized, leaving it permanently stuck at a certain depth (apparently this is a common issue). Next the thing just shut off mid-use. It seems that the motor just died. Do not buy!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Got a bad one. Bought this a month ago and used it today for the first time. Routed out a couple holes in a pine board about the total size of a $5 bill and now as soon as the bit touches the wood the motor slows to a stop. Hope it's just a one off.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Save for something better This and Ryobi's fixed base corded routers are made with numerous poor design choices. Most notable of the ones which plague this model is the very limited travel distance of the plunge mechanism and the force required to plunge the router down. It's worth the bit of extra money to get one that comes with a plunge and fixed base for a removable router core. I don't recommend purchasing this for any reason. Sorry Ryobi. I still love ya but this router is no good.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Many issues with travel and lock but good power Lock mechanism is problematic. Plastic lever sits on a spline nut so adjustment is possible but it is easy to overadjust. Plunge does not travel far due to plastic housing around springs. After removing it, you can get close to an inch of extra travel. Power is good for a tool of low cost. Not a good tool to rely on and use it often. Could work for very occasional use. You get what you pay for.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly Designed and Packaged Tool First, the router does not come with a baseplate insert for using guide bushings - a very common router use - if fact, the router comes with some different sized green plastic baseplate inserts, but NONE of them actually fit into the router's baseplate opening! One is dumbfounded at why these parts are even included with the box. Very confused marketing approach. Also, trying to find one of the correct baseplate inserts for guide bushings is almost impossible except that some sellers will make up custom plates for sale on some websites. Ryobi certainly doesn't make or offer then for sake. Second, the router doesn't plunge near deeply enough for many jobs you'll want to do - very frustrating. Third, the 1/4" collet insert does not hold 1/4" bits tightly enough no matter how tight you try to make it. Fourth, the motor on my brand-new "powerful 2-hp" router stopped functioning in the middle of doing a set of stair stringers, the very first job ever done with it! It's now in for repairs and unavailable for 3 to 4 weeks or so.
