Rated 1 out of 5 by from Brand new .Won't start . Bought this today Very excited to use it . Charged battery Followed instructions for starting . Initially wont start , like not getting any power . After 10- 15 tries FINALLY powered up As soon as put it on 3-rd setting for hight it died off and wont start again . I checked the battery is showing full 4 green lines. Followed step by step instruction for starting . NOTHING. Im totally disappointed , I spent hrs on internet , spent 1 hr in the store asking questions to make sure this is the right machine for me . I guess not. Now I can;r even returned because of COVID . REALLY , REALLY DISAPPOINTED RYOBI.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Mower ! Good Mower...does as advertised..very light and quiet.....the only issue I have is that the rear grass catching bag drags on the grass of course...but it is wearing the cloth on the bottom edge as it rubs,,,fairly quickly..I had to hook a clip to the bag and to the frame to hold it up..it seems ok now. I still would highly recommend this mover..I can cut my lawn 3 times on one charge.small lot ( 50 ft x 100ft plus house on it) but it is a real nice mower...folds up and sits against the wall..another plus/. no gas or oil to fool with..no pull cord..push the start button and go,,,get the self propelled one,,it is great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good mower overall but could use minor improvement Really happy with the lawnmower overall. Able to do our full large lawn in 1 hour on one charge and looks really great. The self propelled feature is very nice. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is that it was hard to get it going initially as the top bar on the mulcher kept popping up out of its groove by 0.5 cm and that would trigger the safety stop feature. After reading other reviews we duct taped it down so it couldn’t come out of the groove and now it runs smoothly without the repeated shut offs. This is a design flaw though that should be addressed as it requires essentially disabling the safety feature to be able to use the mower.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cordless comparison - old vs. new This was my second cordless battery-powered Ryobi mower, so I can compare the 2 in my review. I got use out of my very comparable outgoing 48V Self-propelled Ryobi mower for 7 seasons. When I bought the unit 8 years ago, it was state-of-the-art. I knew no one else with this "new" tech in lawn mowing, but I was drawn to just pushing a button and mowing. No maintenance, no fuel and no pull start. Quiet too. I don't know why the old unit failed, but it never got the job done this year at all. Wouldn't run. The battery still appears to be holding a charge and a smarter man probably could have fixed it, but with the age of the mower, I decided it wasn't worth paying someone else to fix it and felt it was time to upgrade. My biggest concern when purchasing this new unit was the numbers - going from 48V to 40V seems a little like I'm purchasing a lesser machine, not an upgrade. When new, the old mower held enough "juice" to mow my front and backyard twice after charging the battery overnight. The initial charge on the new 40V mower's battery took about 3.5 hours. The side-by-side comparison of the 2 batteries is hilarious! The old battery was huge and heavier than a car battery. My wife could not even lift it off the machine. The new 40V battery is "palm-able" and almost insignificant in weight. It barely affects the weight of the mower when installed. After the initial charge, I encountered problems starting the mower for the first time. Other reviews claimed this mower never worked out of the box, so I nearly freaked. I think the problem may be that the unit has a few too many safety sensors. I had almost given up, but upon playing with the "mulch-plug" a little, it started. The motor sort of kicks in slower and more gradual than the old mower did. This new mower is plastic bodied, which scared me a little. It seems to make the machine a little bulkier, but like the battery, it is far, FAR light than the old unit. Probably less than half the weight. Even with the battery in, the whole mower can be easily lifted one handed using the handle at the rear of the body - it's so handy! The weight becomes important, because dang it, this thing is really easy to whip around fast. The plastic body also seems to be more effective in noise reduction, as this mower sounds different/ quieter than the old guy (which was already pretty quiet). It folds up neatly and is light enough to hang on a shed wall. The weight difference also plays a large factor in sustaining the battery. Because a battery doesn't discharge by acreage, only by how long the motor runs. I was able to "pound off" my modest front and back yard (about 30' x 100' total) effortless in 15-20 minutes, where it used to take me 30 minutes. When I was done, the 40V battery still showed 3 out of 4 bars. So in theory, this 40V battery will last twice as long as the old 48V - win! If there is one reason I would not recommend this unit, it's because I don't think the self-propelling option is worth the extra hundred bucks I paid. On the old heavy unit, I sometime found myself backed into something where I couldn't be directly behind the machine and I'd need to just crack the drive to pull out sometimes. Because of the weight, I thought this was an important feature when buying a mower. But I can't see myself ever getting stuck with this light-weight unit, so if I had it to do over, I'd save myself the money and buy the model down without the feature. It certainly doesn't make the unit inferior, just not as value-conscious. For what it's worth, when I tried it, the drive feature seems far smoother. It is variable speed, so the mower doesn't really yank you like it did on the old mower. I haven't had the time to see if this will hold up for 7 maintenance free years like the other one, but I'm still having fun using it after the first half-dozen uses. The neighbors are envious. I got the coolest mower on the street.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lawnmower It works great but it will not start if the handle isn’t fully locked in the open position. It sometimes slightly gets unlocked and it won’t be obvious to you. I’m very happy with this it runs very quiet and it cuts The grass great. As for the battery I have a typical it’s a large subdivision yard and it uses about half to 3/4 of the battery it has never run out. obviously the longer the grass is The more battery it uses. Another place that I was not expecting is that the mowing deck is made out of a strong plastic so it won’t corrode like my other lawnmowers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible mower, self propelled, effortless mowin Amazing lawn mower. I was considering the 18V model but am so glad that we went with this 40V one. The battery pack included is more than enough battery to mow my entire lawn 4 times or more (goes down 1-2 bars per mow). The one touch height adjustment is something that every mower should adopt! The self propelled feature is something that I never thought I would use much or care for, but now I'm sold - it is absolutely incredible! At max speed it mows faster than I can walk. On the lowest speed setting, I am mowing my lawn nearly twice as fast as I was with a standard push mower. I can push and steer this mower one handed. It is incredible - don't let anyone tell you it's a useless feature! 10/10 mower, I recommend this to anyone with a lawn!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from In for repairs Normally a ryobi fan and have many 18 and 40v products. Purchased in March to be ready for season. Machine worked well for A few cuts and then gave up the ghost. The self propel works however the actual mower would not power up. Took it in under warranty and was warned there was a long wait for parts which has proven to be true. I have now since had to purchase another mower while I continue to sit to see if this one can be fixed. Completely useless to have a seasonal tool that does not work and even worse cannot be fixed in a timely manner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super Quiet and decent battery life Bought this last week and cut the grass this wknd, probably the last time for the season. Lightweight, easy to maneuver, cuts well and I still had 2 bars on the battery left after cutting the front and back. Took some getting use to due to the cutting path being 2" smaller than my old Ariens self propelled gas model. The down side, I find theres a lapse of a few seconds when you engage the rear wheel drive and when it actually engages, not sure if it's designed this way. Due to the light weight I didn't use the self propelled that much do I'm not sure how well the battery would last if it was engaged more frequently. I have a 40V battery for my Ryobi trimmer do I can always use that it need be

Do you need the discharge attachment to mulch?  I don’t want to gag clippings and I see at least one reviewer complaining he needed to buy the attachment, which specifications say isn’t included.

Asked by: SandyPickering
because the bag fills up ridiculously fast, I don't use it.  I simply cut grass with the sold plastic piece (supplied) and I always considered what I do is mulching.  I was not aware of any other attachment/accessory for mulching.

Which model of charger is included in this 20-inch 40V self-propelled lawnmower package?

Asked by: lzhmsa
It's the slide on slow charger model# OP404...... ...but, the good news is, Ryobi included a coupon code for a fast charger! Model# OP406.....They mail it to you. The slow charger takes about 4 hours+ to fully charge from dead. I ran mine to dead to 'reset' the battery on 1st use after a quick 20 minute charge. Count on an hour per bar. Ryobi says the fast charger does it in an hour. Not that it matters much, unless you need more than 50 minutes run time and only have 1 battery. I get 50 minutes + run time, full power till full stop.

I just want to be sure it won't hurt anything if I use a 7.5 amp 40 v battery on my RY401120 lawnmower. I thought it came w two 6 amp batteries but only found 1 when I opened box. I suppose misunderstandings can happen when so many models are advertised.

I am pleased with the Ryobi 40 v lawnmower but I have a problem with the grass catcher bag dis-engaging when the bag has only a small amount of grass in it. Is there something I should be doing to keep the bag in place.

Asked by: Jimmy
Hi Jimmy, Thanks for reaching out to us. The grass bag that attaches to the rear of your lawn mower is held firmly in-place with the latch. The springs within the latch hold the bagger firm to avid the bagger from moving or falling off while the lawn mower is in use. If you are finding an issue with your bagger or the other components, please contact us at 1-800-860-4050 so we can help you better. Thanks, RYOBI Canada Team.
