Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great mower when/if it runs Bought one of these online. It arrived, we unpacked it and took it outside to use after charging the battery for 24 hours....nothing. Tried resetting it by putting handle down then back up, it started ... And ran for under a minute! Ended up taking it back to the store (1 hour drive each way). Got one that works. Used it 3 times in just over 2 weeks, suddenly in the middle of the third mow the blade stopped. Still self propels but won't mow. Call support, try the handle reset trick. No improvement. Told to take it to authorized repair shop (40 min away), they can't get it looked at for 2 weeks...guess we will start a hay field. Thanks for nothing Ryobi.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Charger stopped working after 1st use! I got this mower a month back and it charged well for the first try. I mowed my lawn which worked pretty good and then went back to charge and it won't show any light on the charger. I tried another charger that I got with the trimmer and that one does work, so it's not the battery but the charger that is faulty. Just called their customer support and they picked up the call after 10-15 mins and then they were internally chatting with each other and I kept on saying, hellooooo... but it was more important for them to discuss their internal stuff while a customer was on the line. Trying again to call them and get lucky so they talk to me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mower! Bought this mower reluctantly because I was unfamiliar with the name, how well can you trust commercials? Well, my thoughts: Pros: - key points i was looking for was 40V +5A battery includes as well as brushless motor. This package gives you 2x 40V 6A batteries, with a speed charger; charging with one LED lit on the battery took less than an hour to fully charge - mower has the ability to store vertically; not sure if anyone else has storage issues but this really saves space - I wasn't initally sold on self propelled but it really comes handy when walking uphill; zero effort trying to climb inclines - zero lag in tall grass; my old B&D 24V cordless mower would slow right down or stall if it got into tall grass; not this mower, it did not even change volume or speed when it got into thick grass; it really did act like a gas mower - the 21" deck is large; I didn't realize how many extra steps I took with my old 17" mower - it came with a free 40V brushless trimmer! With 2 batteries, you can get a two man job going to really speed up time Cons: why the LED headlight??? I dont get it! Who mows their lawn at 2am in the morning?? It just contributes to battery drain and there's no way to shut it down; the only gimmick I found on an otherwise amazing product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super-Duper Mower! Incredible mower! Unlike a gas mower, it doesn't bog down very much in high grass and I think that it is actually because you can control the speed of the mover. If the grass is higher, you just slow down some and it cuts tight through. I also like that it is very easy to adjust the mower height with the wheels. The batteries worked for the full 70 minutes as advertised and recharge time is about 90 minutes. You do need to have both batteries at full charge or the cutting time is really reduced. 1 battery by itself gives you about 15 minutes which isn't great, so be sure to use two charged batteries for the 70 minute mowing time. Best mower I have ever owned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mower with zero mechanics in area to fix problems I bought this mower last year and it worked great. Used it properly about once a week during the summer months last year, and a couple months this year. The blade stopped spinning and I contacted Ryobi to get this problem fixed only to be informed that they have no one to repair their products in Nova Scotia and the closest place I can go is Moncton. For the price of these mowers I'm shocked that that's their only option to keep my lawn mowed. I highly recommend getting a gas powered one as lots of people around can fix small motors to keep you going for years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend - Excellent quality I purchased this a week ago to replace my 20yr Toro 22" 6.5hp personal pace self propelled. It seems to have the same power if not more. Does a better job of collecting the grass in the bag. The bag removes and installs easier. I have .25 acre lawn to cut with so far using less than one of the 2 batteries. I am really looking forward to not having to purchase gas, oil , air filters and replace pull cords. One thing that help make the decision was it is easier for my son to use since it is easier to start. I have since purchased the 15" weedeater and 24" headtrimmer. I highly recommend these as well. Good job Ryobi :) I am impressed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money - Fire hazard Bought this three years ago. If you have a small town house it might work ok. Any larger and you spend more time charging batteries and waiting around than mowing the grass. One of the batteries we got with it was defective and only lasted 15 minutes. Finally gave in and wasted another $250 on a 3rd battery. Still run out of battery before we finish mowing when rotating the three. We switched to electric so my wife and teens wouldn't have to mix gas, we wanted a safer experience. Imagine our surprise when it caught fire this week. Nothing like smoke and flames to make you feel safe. I love ryobi 18+ hand tools, I will never buy another 40v tool and deeply regret wasting $1000 on this piece of junk.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money and buy gas powered This is my 3rd year with Ryobi and I hate it. I have about 1/2 acre of property to cut and I tend to go through 3-4 batteries (two 6hr, one 5hr and one 4hr) to get half of my property done and I rarely use the self propelled option to conserve battery. I'm on my 2nd mower as the first one just completely quit under a year of use. 2 of the batteries are constantly overheating when in use and they have to cool off before you can recharge them. It'll take 2 hours before I can finish the job of cutting my property. The lawn mower would be okay, if I didn't need to constantly be changing the batteries but it doesn't work with out batteries.

The description mentions dual active battery ports but I see in the reviews that people refer to changing the battery after one is exhausted. Question: Does this mower use both batteries simultaneously without the need to change the battery?

Asked by: DesF
The mower uses one battery at a time, the arrow on the safety key pointing to which of the two batteries is in use. If you exhaust the battery, turning the safety key to point to the other battery puts you back in business.

Can I turn off self-propelled feature on this lawn mower (Model # RY401140US) and use it as a push lawn mower? Thanks.

Asked by: lzhmsa
You can run mower and not engage the self-propelled feature, but its a heavy mower for being electric. If you never want to use the self-propelled option look at a different mower.

The instructions show a mulching plug and a side discharge chute.  Was it supposed to come with these parts? It sure didn’t.  And it says that it won’t start without either the bagger or the mulch plug attached. I’m not bagging my grass. It needs to mulch

Asked by: Marshmallow
There should be a mulching plug in the package, for you to (optionally) install. My recollection from last spring is that my (2021) 21” Ryobi ran fine without using the bagger attachment. The mulching piece (installed it shortly after test-cutting) actually blocks the side discharge chute.  So yes, you should have received a mulching attachment. If you lawn mower os

I have a steep slope is this lawn mower able to handle steep slopes

Asked by: 1bhive
I have a 1/4 acre yard. I can cut the yard with one battery. Might need both when the lawn thickens up. The mower increases in power with going through thicker grass.

I love how this mower folds for storage. Does Ryobi make a wall mount to be able to store this on a wall during the winter months?

Asked by: Zoolaband
Hi Zoolaband, Thanks for reaching out to us regarding the 40V HP Brushless Cordless 21-inch Self-Propelled Walk-Behind Lawn Mower Kit. We do not have a lawn mower wall mount system, but we did just release our RYOBI LINK Modular Storage System, which is an ideal fit for power tools and other lawn and garden tools. The Wall Rails have a 75 lb. per linear foot weight capacity, so I would not suggest using it to hang your lawn mower. If you want to disengage the self propel motor and ratchet wheel assembly one day, is it possible to do so and use like a normal manual push mower?

Asked by: Matt
Hi Matt, Thanks for reaching out to us regarding the 40V HP Brushless Cordless 21-inch Self-Propelled Walk-Behind Lawn Mower. The only option would be to not engage the self-propelled function, and push the unit manually, which would add some slight resistance. We do not suggest making any modifications to the wheel assembly. For further information, please contact RYOBI Customer Support at 1-800-860-4050. Thanks, RYOBI Canada Team.

Got the mower out of the box and charged the batteries and started the mower and every time I turned the mower it would shut off.  Even if I was going along in a straight it would shut off when I slowed down.  Any ideas why?

Asked by: Iggy23
Have not had these problems and can only give you an educated guess. The first issue, as the mower starts slowly, suggest you hold the start button for a couple of seconds to allow the internal system to catch. The second issue, when you slow down using the speed slider, it takes electrical power from the mower and if the grass is even a little long it will not have much power and cause the mover to stop. Also when the battery is running down the power is dramatically reduced. This product is only 40 volt so is not that powerful and does not cut long grass very efficiently. Hope this helps with understand the limitations of, what is a fairly low powered mower. An 80 volt machine would give far more power.
