Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great mower when/if it runs Bought one of these online. It arrived, we unpacked it and took it outside to use after charging the battery for 24 hours....nothing. Tried resetting it by putting handle down then back up, it started ... And ran for under a minute! Ended up taking it back to the store (1 hour drive each way). Got one that works. Used it 3 times in just over 2 weeks, suddenly in the middle of the third mow the blade stopped. Still self propels but won't mow. Call support, try the handle reset trick. No improvement. Told to take it to authorized repair shop (40 min away), they can't get it looked at for 2 weeks...guess we will start a hay field. Thanks for nothing Ryobi.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Charger stopped working after 1st use! I got this mower a month back and it charged well for the first try. I mowed my lawn which worked pretty good and then went back to charge and it won't show any light on the charger. I tried another charger that I got with the trimmer and that one does work, so it's not the battery but the charger that is faulty. Just called their customer support and they picked up the call after 10-15 mins and then they were internally chatting with each other and I kept on saying, hellooooo... but it was more important for them to discuss their internal stuff while a customer was on the line. Trying again to call them and get lucky so they talk to me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mower! Bought this mower reluctantly because I was unfamiliar with the name, how well can you trust commercials? Well, my thoughts: Pros: - key points i was looking for was 40V +5A battery includes as well as brushless motor. This package gives you 2x 40V 6A batteries, with a speed charger; charging with one LED lit on the battery took less than an hour to fully charge - mower has the ability to store vertically; not sure if anyone else has storage issues but this really saves space - I wasn't initally sold on self propelled but it really comes handy when walking uphill; zero effort trying to climb inclines - zero lag in tall grass; my old B&D 24V cordless mower would slow right down or stall if it got into tall grass; not this mower, it did not even change volume or speed when it got into thick grass; it really did act like a gas mower - the 21" deck is large; I didn't realize how many extra steps I took with my old 17" mower - it came with a free 40V brushless trimmer! With 2 batteries, you can get a two man job going to really speed up time Cons: why the LED headlight??? I dont get it! Who mows their lawn at 2am in the morning?? It just contributes to battery drain and there's no way to shut it down; the only gimmick I found on an otherwise amazing product

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super-Duper Mower! Incredible mower! Unlike a gas mower, it doesn't bog down very much in high grass and I think that it is actually because you can control the speed of the mover. If the grass is higher, you just slow down some and it cuts tight through. I also like that it is very easy to adjust the mower height with the wheels. The batteries worked for the full 70 minutes as advertised and recharge time is about 90 minutes. You do need to have both batteries at full charge or the cutting time is really reduced. 1 battery by itself gives you about 15 minutes which isn't great, so be sure to use two charged batteries for the 70 minute mowing time. Best mower I have ever owned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly recommend - Excellent quality I purchased this a week ago to replace my 20yr Toro 22" 6.5hp personal pace self propelled. It seems to have the same power if not more. Does a better job of collecting the grass in the bag. The bag removes and installs easier. I have .25 acre lawn to cut with so far using less than one of the 2 batteries. I am really looking forward to not having to purchase gas, oil , air filters and replace pull cords. One thing that help make the decision was it is easier for my son to use since it is easier to start. I have since purchased the 15" weedeater and 24" headtrimmer. I highly recommend these as well. Good job Ryobi :) I am impressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ryobi Electric Mower I was skeptical about buying an electric mower but mostly did it because thought it would be easier so my wife & kids could use it without the issues of not having gas, can't get it starter, etc... This mower is fantastic, mows great, the self propelled is awesome, no issues so far. I have a large property and was worried about battery life but have yet to even kill 1 battery let alone have to switch to the 2nd that it came with. So far it is super easy to use, I love the fact you only hold the safety lever and hit the button to start mowing. HIghly recommend to anyone!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Reasonable but not wonderful. I purchased the 40V Self Propelled Lawn Mower a few weeks ago. I have used it a dozen times. I am a little disappointed. My biggest concern is maneuverability. Pro's: Easy to start. Will not rust. Easy to clean underneath. Don't have to bother with gas and oil. Battery's charge quick. Comes fully assembled. Comes with two battery's and both are carries in the mower and is easy to switch over. Somewhat cheaper than competitors equivalent. Good mower and battery warranty. Con's: Much heavier than I anticipated. Much more difficult to maneuver than my gas version with front wheel drive. Should be made with front wheel drive not back wheel drive. On a normal garden, battery's will not last as long as company says. I have a fairly small garden and it takes 1 and a 1/2 battery's. Overall reasonable for the price and has benefits of battery power but maneuverability is an issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Died in less than 1 year and warranty is a pain. Bought August 25, 2022. Stopped working August 11, 2023. Not even 1 year in. HD also no longer services Ryobi so I had to take it to a service center which was 2 hours away. Estimated wait time...... 2 months. 0 videos on DIY solutions for these electric mowers. Breaks down in 1 year and the warranty is a massive hassle, 2 month wait, so what am i supposed to do with my yard? Borrow my neighbors Gas mower? Once I get it back fixed im selling it and buying gas again, atleast there are thousands of DIY videos to fix/maintain them for 20 years.

I bought a new lawn mower model RY401140US . Is it possible to stop the blade and continue with the self- propelled only ? Tank you

Asked by: Johnnyboy
Yes, it is. There are three controls on the handle: the bar that you have to pull to use any of the power, the two levers (joined) that control the self-propelling, the button that starts the cutting blade spinning. So to propel the mower without cutting, pull the bar and then the levers. You can control the speed with the sliding switch (a fourth control, also on the handle).

The description mentions dual active battery ports but I see in the reviews that people refer to changing the battery after one is exhausted. Question: Does this mower use both batteries simultaneously without the need to change the battery?

Asked by: Desfaria
The mower uses one battery at a time, the arrow on the safety key pointing to which of the two batteries is in use. If you exhaust the battery, turning the safety key to point to the other battery puts you back in business.

Can I turn off self-propelled feature on this lawn mower (Model # RY401140US) and use it as a push lawn mower? Thanks.

Asked by: lzhmsa
Hi -lzhmsa, Thanks for reaching out to us. This 40V HP Brushless Cordless 21-inch Self-propelled Walk-Behind Lawn Mower has several capabilities including being rear-wheel driven and self-propelled. At the top of the handle bars are levers that will start the lawn mower, and also engage the self-propelled option. You do not need to action the lever to activate the self-propelled wheels. If you feel that this option does not suit your needs in a lawn mower we have this same product in a non-self-propelled option. To review all of our lawn mower options visit homedepot.ca RYOBI lawn mowers or contact us at 1-800-860-4050. Thanks, RYOB Canada Team.

The instructions show a mulching plug and a side discharge chute.  Was it supposed to come with these parts? It sure didn’t.  And it says that it won’t start without either the bagger or the mulch plug attached. I’m not bagging my grass. It needs to mulch

Asked by: Marshmallow
Yes , mine only came with the rear bagger. Side discharge was extra and not included. It runs just fine without either, I've never used rear bagger.

I have a steep slope is this lawn mower able to handle steep slopes

Asked by: 1bhive
I have a 1/4 acre yard. I can cut the yard with one battery. Might need both when the lawn thickens up. The mower increases in power with going through thicker grass.

If you want to disengage the self propel motor and ratchet wheel assembly one day, is it possible to do so and use like a normal manual push mower?

Asked by: Matt
You can just push it.  When you want to engage the self propel motor, you need to hold down a lever in the handle.  Very easy to switch between the two methods.

Got the mower out of the box and charged the batteries and started the mower and every time I turned the mower it would shut off.  Even if I was going along in a straight it would shut off when I slowed down.  Any ideas why?

Asked by: Iggy23
This has never happened to me. Could it be that when you turn you are inadvertently letting go of the hand holds of the safety shut off?
