Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lawnmower continually shuts off I purchased this Ry401140 self-propelled lawn mower yesterday from Home Depot. I managed to cut cut most of my yard, but have been unable to finish because the lawn mower keeps shutting itself off after a few seconds. When it happened initially, I thought the battery had died and switched the key to use the other battery, but it quickly shut-off again. To double-check it wasn't a charging issue, I charged both batteries again, but keep getting the same result - the lawn mower keeps shutting down 2 -10 second after starting. Quite frustrating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Moses like a charm Just completed first cut of a 3000 sq. Ft lawn with 6in tall grass. Cut 2 1/2 to 3 inches and filled 5 bags of cuttings. Battery lasted until last pass then died. Do not expect this to happen again as will not let grass grow that long. When finished I tipped the deck over and there was not one blade of grass in the deck. Very impressed with the operation except for one minor detail. The slide button for the self propel motor has a tendency to move on its own or can be easily repositioned without being aware. Will probably tape it to the position which gives me the most comfortable speed. All in all a very good product and very easy to handle for a poor old pensioner..

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Battery power I got the RYOBI 40V HP 21 in. lawn mower with 2 batteries. It does surprisingly well. My only complaint is the batteries don't last long. I have 2 batteries. They charge slowly too. It takes way too long to mow even a quarter of an acre. Family bought 2 more batteries thinking we could charge while mowing keeping it continuous, but they were $200.00 each! I can't afford $400.00 for 2 batteries so I returned them. Looks like I'm stuck with things the way they are. I'll have to mow every day now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Machine! I love this mower! I had tried a different brand and was not happy so went with the Ryobi since I already had other garden tools with the same battery and I am so happy I did. It is easy to maneuver, makes a really nice clean cut, and the one touch fold down handle is far superior to the other brand that required the removal of a couple of screws to lay the handle flat. It took me about an hour to do my front and back yard, at a modest pace, and no issues with battery life. Definitely recommend!

If you want to disengage the self propel motor and ratchet wheel assembly one day, is it possible to do so and use like a normal manual push mower?

Asked by: Matt
Hi Matt, Thanks for reaching out to us regarding the 40V HP Brushless Cordless 21-inch Self-Propelled Walk-Behind Lawn Mower. The only option would be to not engage the self-propelled function, and push the unit manually, which would add some slight resistance. We do not suggest making any modifications to the wheel assembly. For further information, please contact RYOBI Customer Support at 1-800-860-4050. Thanks, RYOBI Canada Team.

Is this supposed to come with the mulching plug? Our box arrived completely torn up, lawnmower cracked, and no mulching plug in evidence.

Is it easy to use this mower with the self propel function turned off? I'd like to be able to just push the mower for exercise.

This mower cuts well. I bought it two weeks ago and used it for the very first time the other day. Three of the wheels fell off and keep coming off. This is horrible and a royal pain. What's the deal here?

I live in Labrador and was wondering how the batteries hold up in -40 degress temps. I do not have a heated storage shed.

Asked by: Lynn
I'm in Ottawa and kept mine in an unheated garage (our winter got down to -25 or -30 C) but have yet to mow this year - they survived physically (no cracks or anything). If you're concerned, the batteries (and charger) are small enough to bring indoors over winter.

If I am reading the manual correctly, it appears to say to remove the batteries before emptying the grass catcher? Is it really necessary to remove and then reinstall the battery packs every time you empty the catcher?

I have the same question. I never mow at night and it would seem that you would not want to use battery power for something that is not necessary. Please explain the decision.
