Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolute garbage! Should have went elsewhere to get a tap and die set, as other reviews mentioned the "t" handle doesn't fit the small taps and no die holder inside. Fortunately I had a metric set with decent handles to use with the set Apart from that, the tap drill size is totally wrong, I needed to have 3 - 8/32" holes so I drilled the indicated 1/8" hole and seemed like it was too small as the tap wouldn't even start the threads. I moved up to the next larger drill size in my kit and it seemed to be working a little until it snapped the tap about halfway in which basically ruined the project I was working on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money, buy a better set Bought this yesterday. Collet won't securely hold the smaller taps, not even when working in soft aluminum. The tap just slips and the cheap t-handle (just a 1/4" rod that keeps falling out) turns with zero effect. Also, no die holder and no real instructions. Am returning it to HD today.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from top holder does not tighten down enough Like the price and the compactness I only have the rare occasion to tap out standard sized holes in and around my modest shop. Two stars because the tap holder slips a bit on the two smallest taps. Still, handy to have in the kit and I did not want or need say a 50 piece set or something like that. Also, no die holder but knew that going it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I'm pleased with the product. This product is very functional if you know what to do. To begin with, the 6-32 tap must be placed as far as possible inside the Tap Wrench; therefore it will not be able to rotate, which is good, plus stronger support. Then tighten the the Tap Wrench using Channellocks (Pump pliers). Hand strength will not be strong enough, so use pliers. For the rest of the taps, the Tap Wrench should grip the bottom square portion of the tap, so that it will prevent any rotation. Again, tighten with pliers. You should have no problem after that. I do wish that there had been a better design for the die compartment. However, you can solve this by placing a small cloth or paper towel inside, so that it puts pressure on the casing. With paper towel, I tried shaking and the dies didn't move. You're gonna have to find middle ground - not too much cloth and not too little.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Got the job done I didn't have the issues other reviewers experienced, I was able to tap 4 screw holes in some 16Ga steel to mount a ceiling fixture. It's definitely not the highest quality set, the t-handle slides out of the tap wrench through either side which can be annoying, but I was able to get the job done with some clamps and elbow grease. For the price I think this is reasonable and good enough for the odd DIY job around the house.

what holds the die for putting threads on a rod?

Asked by: Clintox101
Hi Clintox101, Many people use wrenches or ratchets told on the die when threating new rod. Other users can use normal pliers or other hand tools to hold onto the die. Which ever tool your using ensure your using it safely. Thanks for reaching out, RYOBI Canada.
