Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great template tool, poor hole saws. The template itself is a great idea and tool. Easy to put on the door and lineup and drill the holes required for the door handle or lock install. Unfortunately where this tool fails is the actual hole saws that are included. First up the 2 1/8” hole saw is not actually deep enough to go completely through a 1 3/4” door although that is what the product label says it will do. I had to drill from both sides of the door. Second the 1” hole saw is deep enough to do the required hole but the pilot bit is shorter than the hole saw making it useless as a pilot bit. Overall I enjoy the template but the hole saws are garbage and cheap and I doubt I will use them again as they are worn out after one door.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lines up holes well, hole saws are meh The alignment tool was great for a home gamer like me who had never drilled out a door before. For that alone, it was worth buying it. However, the 2 1/8" hole saw is really shallow. I had a thin door (shortest setting on the guide) and the hole saw bottomed out before getting through. I had to flip the door and go in from the other side to finish. The teeth on the hole saw (both of them) clogged really quickly and I had to stop and clean the teeth a couple of times. If you don't plan to drill many doors, then I think it's well worth the cost. If you do, though, then invest in separate, good quality hole saws.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job just fine. As the previous reviewer stated this is made of plastic and is not as solid as a metal version. However I did not have it break and used it on 3 doors, one solid wood and 2 metal exterior. I found that if you attached the jig to the door and used the hole saws to set the pilot hole and score the circle you could then remove the jig and finish your holes. I did mine this way and had everything line up perfectly. The jig and hole saws are now in my toolbox and I would not hesitate to use them again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked great! I've used this on 3 doors so far and about to use it on a 4th. I had never drilled for a new deadbolt before, but this really made it easier. I was patient and took my time and was able to use this as a guide to drill everything in the right spot. The hole saws still work well after 3 bi-metal doors. I think the key is to be patient and not be rammy! I was able to get the pieces apart with some vice grips, it wasn't too hard. I think if you went too quickly you could end up over-torqueing the two pieces causing them to seize. I wouldn't have had the confidence to do this with only a paper template.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Never worked as well as I had hoped I purchased this a month ago to install a deadbolt in a new door. The only problem is that the door had a glass insert so when the kit went over the side of the door it was too long. I had to use it on an angle which worked but the hole came out a little off center. I would anticipate that if the door did not have a glass insert it would have been perfect. So beware if you purchase this that in order for it to work properly the door cannot have any glass insert or it won't drill the hole for the deadbolt properly. As well the hole saw got stuck on the drill bit and I could not get it off no matter how hard I tried. I had to use my old faithful hole saw from another company that was much older but works perfect everytime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for the "Do it Yourself" My project was to update the interior doors in our house which is 40 years old. I am just a homeowner, not a carpenter, just a "Do it yourself" kind of guy, for simple repairs. I did not need to change the door frames so I purchase the Ryobi Wood/Metal Door Lock Installation Kit and the Ryobi Door Hinge Template. I purchased 10 basic six panel interior doors from Home Depot. I put the old doors on top of the new ones and traced the holes and hinge placements. Both Ryobi products worked great. They are both made out of hard plastic and I am sure would wear out if you did this for a living but performed perfectly for me. After using them on 10 doors, the plastic components still look brand new. The hole saws are of cheap quality and were not cutting as well at the end. This was much less expensive and a lot easier than changing the doors and frames. The average cost for a framed door is around $110.00 vs $35.00 for just the door + the cost of the hinges ($10.00 per door). If you multiply the savings X 10 doors, I saved over $500.00

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worse than useless. Do not buy! This item is worse than useless. Not only did the plastic jig brake on the first use (wish I read the reviews here first), but it also made the hole saw jump, and catch on the metal facing of the door, causing nasty scratches all over the place. And the hole saw itself is so dull, it won't even start to cut into the metal. It only slides around. I would give this thing zero stars if I could. 1 star is too kind.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy this if you promptly want to wreck your door. A poor locking mechanism on the 2 3/8" to 2 3/4" selector mechanism causes the jig to skip as soon as you drill. The hole saw is not deep enough to cut through a standard door, and is dull at best. The arbor will not stay in the bits either. Poor design and quality. I do not recommend purchasing.

Can this be used as a template to install an interior door knob?

Asked by: ericp
Hi Ericp, Yes, as long as it fits the dimensions for the door numb you want to install.

How is this tool/kit used to drill the hole in the door from both sides? I see other kits that have the hole saw guide on both sides of the door to avoid splintering the door and just want to confirm how this unit does that. Thanks.

Asked by: youngk2
Hi There, Thanks for reaching out to us regarding the Wood/Metal Door Lock Installation Kit. With this kit, you will drill from one side until the pilot bit shows on the opposite side of the door. Then, you will drill on the opposite side, by lining up the pilot bit hole with the pilot bit. Meet the two holes in the center of door. For further information, please contact RYOBI Customer Support at 1-800-525-2579. Thanks, RYOBI Canada Team.
