It setup within 2 minutes. This did not give me enough time to thoroughly mix that amount, nor apply. Just as an experiment, I mixed enough for 1/4 of a 1 gallon container. That setup in less than 3 minutes. I wasted $26.00 + tax. I did not read any instructions, beware alarms, regarding work time.

I purchased 30 of the 40# bags of Sakrete Flo-Coat Concrete Resurfacer, along with 15 boxes of the Sakrete Terracotta Cement Color Mix to resurface our 1,000 sqft concrete driveway with color. The weather was 72 F, partly cloudy. The surface had been powerwashed the day prior with 3100 psi Generac, a crack was filled in using Sakrete Crack Filler, and all debris was removed prior to applying. My husband and a hired friend mixed the colorant with 3.5 qt. water into a 5 gal. bucket, then attempted to mix in the product using a drill and heavy duty paddle mixer. The product was unable to be poured with adding more water. After ruining 2 buckets (with hardened product) and burning up a good drill, they were able to achieve a good flowable mix. Once poured onto slab (wetted first), however, the product literally thickened within minutes to point that it couldn't be moved to the proper thickness with a squeegee, brush or even a trowel. They attempted to repeat the same process, adding more water to make the mix more soupier, however the product would not spread in a consistent manner. Now I have 2 slabs at the end of my driveway covered in what looks like a clay pot hit-n-run massacre, and it is hideous! Save your money and your back - don't buy this product.

What is the maximum amount of water that is recommended for a flowable consistency?

Asked by: George
I don't have a precision answer. I tried a mix that resembled thin mud, and it was ok. I also tried more water to achieve a mix that was very runny, and it worked perfectly. Better, in fact because it was easier to apply and make smooth and level. So mix, add water and stir until the product is very runny. Then slop it on the concrete and trowel around until rough surfaces are coated. Rinse, repeat. Don't fret if the mix seems too watery - it will harden.

I want to mix this product to a flowable consistency. What is the maximum amount of water that I can safely add to an 18 kg bag?

Asked by: George
One 18.1 KG (40 lb) bag requires approximately 3.3 L (3.5 qts) of clean water ….. Complete product information is available at ….. https://www.kpmindustries.com/KingHomeImprovementProducts/product/sakrete-flo-coat/ ….. PROCEDURES ….. Use only when the product, air and surface temperature are above 10 °C (50 °F) and remain for a minimum of 24 hours. Surface Preparation: The substrate must be sound, clean, hard and free of dust, dirt, grease, oil, paint, sealers, curing compounds and other materials that will interfere with the bonding of the new material. Pressure washing is recommended with a 17 MPa (2500 psi) pressure washer. Prior to application, fill any cracks and pitted or deteriorated areas with SAKRETE Flo-Coat, mixed to a trowelable consistency (8 parts powder to 1 part water, by volume). Allow any repairs to set before resurfacing begins. NOTE: DO NOT USE WITH A BONDING AGENT. ….. Mixing: One 18.1 KG (40 lb) bag requires approximately 3.3 L (3.5 qts) of clean water. First, add most of the water to a 20 L (5 US gallon) bucket. Then, pour the powder into the bucket and mix with a high-torque, variable-speed drill using a paddle mixer attachment, running at low rpm to avoid splattering. Mix for approximately 2 minutes, adding remainder of the water as needed. Let the material sit for 1 minute, then finish mixing for another minute to a lump-free, pourable consistency. Excess water reduces strength, durability, bonding and can cause cracking. Use cold water to slow the set in hot weather. ….. Placing: Dampen the surface with water. Pour the mixed material onto the surface and spread it with a long-handled squeegee. If squeegee marks are evident, drag a stiff bristle broom over the material immediately after using the squeegee. If done when the SAKRETE Flo-Coat is still fluid this will evenly blend the material together. Do not allow the material to spill into expansion joints and control joints, as these should be preserved with tape or other means. Finishing: For a textured finish, use a broom in complete strokes over the surface after SAKRETE Flo-Coat stiffens but before final set. To build up the application thickness, use additional thin layers after each layer cures for 24 hours. CURING ….. Curing means maintaining proper moisture and temperature. Allow newly placed material to set until surface is hard to the touch. Under most conditions SAKRETE Flo-Coat requires no special curing. When temperatures are above 32 °C (90 °F) spray with a fine mist for 24 hours. Protect from freezing for a minimum of 24 hours. Protect surface from rain for 8 hours. Hope this information is helpful.

I am resurfacing some concrete stairs. Can this be used on vertical surfaces such as the risers of the stairs?

Asked by: BM16
Its best to finish the risers with a sponge parged finish in regular type s mortar. A riser is essentially a kick plate made of masonry. If it cracks you're jeopardizing the treads as water begins to seep in and expand as it freezes.

Could I use a cement mixer to mix several bags at one time to do a larger area? Are there any precautions to take?

Asked by: Anonymous
Please follow the directions on the packaging! Mixing SAKRETE Flo-Coat should only be done using a high torque variable speed drill using a paddle mixer attachment. Mixing: One 18.1 kg bag requires approximately 3.3 L (3.5 quarts) of clean water. First add most of the water to a 20 litre (5 gallon) bucket. Then pour the powder into the bucket and mix with a high torque variable speed drill using a paddle mixer attachment, running at low rpm to avoid splattering. Mix approximately 2 minutes adding remainder of the water as needed. Let the material sit for 1 minute, then fi nish mixing for another minute to a lump-free, pourable consistency. Excess water reduces strength, durability, bonding and can cause cracking. Use cold water to slow the set in hot weather.
