Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great unit. This takes better advantage of 9+ foot ceilings. Once together, this is a very nice shelving unit that takes advantage of taller ceilings. At 6' 5", I'm always annoyed at 72" tall shelf units when I can reach much higher up and utilize the space closer to the ceiling. This self is narrower at 18" which I also appreciate because it doesn't stick out into the garage as much. There are very few shelf items that are deeper than 18" anyways so a 24" deep shelf is pointless. Attaching the top to the bottom of this unit was annoying. Once it's done the set up is solid, but until then I would recommend asking somebodies help in holding the pieces in place while you hammer the sides into the tapered slots.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as sturdy as expected of Heavy Duty unit Unit is only one I could find 4' wide and 18" deep. I needed that size for the space I was putting it. Unit requires shelf placement where top and bottom posts come together which limits other shelf placements. Unit is made of thinner material and is less stable than unit I already had. I reduced this problem by bolting the new unit to the old making it more stable. I've only had it about a month and I don't know yet if it will stand up to the weight it is supposed to support. Unit was easy to assemble. I recommend this unit only if you have to have 4' X 18" unit, otherwise go with a heavier duty unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shelves are strong, adjustable, attractive, good value. I was looking for free standing shelves that were 7 feet tall and these are the only ones I found for home use. They went together quite easily. The only tricky part of the assembly is the corner splices and it takes 4 hands (two people) to do each one. I bought four assemblies and put them end to end on one wall of my garage. I have several different spaces tailered for the heights of my containers and items. If I had a garage wide enough, I would get four more for the other wall. One addition to the box that would help is an inexpensive, throwaway clip to aid in the corner splice assembly.

OK quality lightweight shelves on a heavy duty framework. The shelving does have a tendency to not sit perfectly upright and level so it is better to secure to a back wall once in place

One board of the 2 units I purchased did have minor damage (dinged corner), but they are otherwise in excellent shape. They are very sturdy, good quality. I did NOT have any difficulty putting them together...highly recommend!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This product is not well made. No vertical supports on the angle pieces to help strengthen the unit. The vertical supports need to be strengthened with a clip as it just holds together with the shelf brackets. This is very difficult to put together as the vertical angle piece does not fit well. Two shelves were completely broken due to shipping. The shelf rails are packed behind the first shelf piece and both units I purchased were broken.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's okay... could be better. The shelves seem to be holding the weight the advertised (i've loaded them up for real). The setup was slightly unpleasant. Not hard, you'll just need a rubber mallet and patience so you don't bend the angle iron. But a piece or two hit me in the head (it's not at all stable until hammered together). And it's about 30 minutes of noisy banging. The design is questionable in that the uprights are two pieces instead of one long continuous support. They are precariously balanced on top of each other with only a shelf half attached to each bonding them together. It seems crazy. That said, so far they haven't buckled or moved. But i'm not subjecting them to any lateral force either... also the horizontal shelves themselves are like particleboard? inserts which don't fit all that snugly into the frame. For that matter, the frame seems to give a little (especially on the long side) around them. I don't think they'll stand up to a lot of abuse (throwing heavy things on and off, for example).

Are the shelves steel as well or are they wood?

You'll probably have to contact the manufacturer. I'm sure they can supply parts. If your item comes without a part contacting the manufacturer will typically get you the part you need so I'm sure they have spare parts. Try calling the phone number on the instruction sheet.

I need both the 48" wide version but also a narrower version, something like 36 in W x 84 in. H x 18 in D.

Does Home Depot sell the Upright (add=on) to join two units?

I called Edsall customer service at 773 475 3000, and learned these are not available: "that's our policy." Rude customer service, I don't mind - but I'll go ahead and ask: was the person on the phone as inept as it would appear, or is there some way to go around the manufacturer to obtain this part?

Is the shelf unit exactly 48 inches after it is put together? I am concerned the screws to attach the unit together might stick out to make it wider.

I have a space that is exactly 48 inches wide and I want to make sure it fits after it is assembled.

Stable without a bottom shelf?

I'd like to be able to roll things under these shelves. Would they be stable if the first shelf is at 18 or 24" up?

You should be able to at a maximum start your shelf at 18" and be stable. Ideally you would use 1 beam along the back bottom for stability. I hope this helps.
