Rated 1 out of 5 by from grotesque odour! Don't buy! An employee at Home depot recommended this soil for our planter boxes and pots. We can no longer sit on our patio, the smell is so disgusting! I'm going to have to try and replant all my flowers and vegetables because the space is unusable and I'm afraid the neighbours will smell it! I can't open my windows! This is so disappointing, I'm going to have to try to save my flowers and vegetables I spent so much on and repot them in better soil, so I can try to throw this crap out! Homedepot employees need better training too, it says right on the bag don't use in pots but he recommended it. Terrible experience not being able to enjoy my patio.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruined my garden I bought this for our new flower garden several weeks ago. It had a strong odor when I opened it that I assumed would go away, but it didn’t. Our back yard smells so disgusting that we can’t sit on our patio and the kids stopped using their trampoline. The bags were also full of gnats and there’s still a cloud through our entire yard even after a frost. I can’t stay in the yard long enough to plant anything so I can’t say if it’s actually good for growing plants.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Full of plastic and debris - do not buy I bought six bags of this "premium" garden soil on the weekend. I used three bags in the garden and there were visible pieces of small plastic and other debris in the package. It rained and now all that garbage has appeared on the surface. Small pieces of plastics, broken down plastic bags, twist ties etc. Clearly they are using municipal compost in the product. A premium product should be carefully screened for inorganic material.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from More twigs and less soil! Mushroom mushroom mushroI'm. I am really disappointed of the product regarding the mushroom growth and the amount of wood in it. We bought almost 15 bags for our garden needs and none of the garden bed is free from mushrooms. Since it's already taken out from the bags, I'll have to live with it his season !

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My yard stinks like a pig farm We bought 5 bags of this soil to fill some planters for our deck. The soil itself seems decent enough and so far my plants haven't died, but the SMELL!! It's just revolting - my yard smells like a pig farm. I have never bought soil from Scott's or any other brand that smells like this. Judging from many of the other reviews, this isn't a rare problem. It's like Home Depot is trying to sell off these bags of soil from last year and the compost/liquid fertilizer has fermented horribly inside the bags. I am hoping the smell will dissipate over time, but it can't be soon enough. I plan to contact Scott's and take advantage of their money back guarantee as stated on the Home Depot website: "Scotts No-Quibble Guarantee: If for any reason you, the consumer, are not satisfied after using this product, you are entitled to get your money back. Simply send us evidence of purchase and we will mail you a refund check promptly." I suggest others follow suit - maybe Scott's will get the hint that this isn't an acceptable product by any stretch of the imagination (or nose. . . )

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wood Mulch in Soil I have extensive gardens and have bought various soil brands for years. I also purchase many bags of mulch each season. Soil should not contain wood chips as this product does. If I want mulch I purchase mulch, but I don’t want mulch intentionally in my garden. The garden already gets mulch in the soil every season unintentionally via decay, compression and leaf raking. Mulch in soil is just unnecessary filler.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Less than 1 star Completely agree with the other comments!! Thank goodness I only bought 2 bags!! My yard stinks and it’s killing my flowers!! Will be contacting Scott’s!! These are supertunia trailing in deep red and white, for Canada Day! I buy them, and only them, at an actual garden center/greenhouse, they are plentiful and hardy and last well into the fall. I used this soil because I trust the name and the price was really good. I guess you get what you pay for!! I highly recommend you DO NOT BUY this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scott’s soil is literally garbage!!!! Horrible soil, DO NOT purchase! Full of glass, metal chards, tons and tons of plastic bits and pieces, twist ties and pottery pieces! Smelly, wet and moody to boot! Yea be read complaints such as mine from a year ago and I see they haven’t changed anything! They paid me back for the dirt but not the taxes and now I don’t know if it’s safe to grow a garden in? They couldn’t answer my questions. So who’s going to me for all the labour of removing all the soil out of my beds and the loss of my garden veggies for the year? Disappointed to say the least and really poor customer service!

Does anyone have thoughts for getting rid of the rank smell?  I'm going to try to replant everything but not sure I can get rid of it all.

Asked by: Chris563
Have you used mulch? I like to cover soil with 2 to 3 inches of brown mulch, or red mulch where appearance is important. Maybe it will help with the smell.

How long did it take for the nasty smell to go away. We put this is in a flower bed by our front door and the smell makes me gag every time I walk by it.
