Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely amazing results I used this product last year before applying sod in my back yard and also on my side and front yards while overseeing in late spring. My grass was looking so green and healthy that all my neighbours asked me which product I used. I reapplied in early fall when overseeing again before my late fall fertilizer . This spring, my grass looked healthy from the start, with very few weeds. Again, In Ate spring, I reapplied the starter fertilizer and overseeded my lawn. It’s absolutely beautiful and healthy. If you follow the directions, you cannot go wrong. I highly recommend all of Scott’s fertilizers, but especially this one if you are overseeing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from big dissapointment I bought this due to the good reviews, but it seems that I was SADLY mistaken. I dont know what this product did to my lawn exactly, but to my knowledge, it is now smelling very weird. this appeared only after I put the lawn food in my lawn. it smells herbal and woody, and it makes me feel weird. DONT BUY!!!!!!!! -Jan

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wrong Quantity I ordered for 4.7 Kgs but I was handed over 1.4 Kgs bag. Home depot charged me too much for 4.7 Kgs but handed me over 1.4 Kgs bag when I got the curbside delivery. I paid $23.48 plus tax for a $10 item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well! As far as I remember using and seeing results I think it worked well. Lawn is improved. The rest I will just blame on weeds.

Hi The sod was just laid out before last winter. I am wondering if this product is good or not for the new laid out sod. Thanks

Asked by: Prez
Depends. Usually when laying new sod you would use this or have something similar supplied with the sod to lay down before on the dirt or just after on your new lawn. This starter has a more balanced combination and includes high levels of phosphorus which is intended for germination assistance and root growth (specifically new sod application or seeding areas). If you have laid you sod last year late and it's thriving already, then this may not be a benefit. Too much phosphorus (the middle number) can damage your soil and cause excess run off into other areas. If you didn't put anything similar down at the time and you feel the grass could use a boost then I'd say this is a very good product. Also if you did put something down and it's been a few months and you don't see the roots grabbing or growing like you'd expect you could use it as recommended. Other fertilizer ratios to consider would be in the ratio or 3 or 4:1:2 Just don't over do it and be patient.

How to best use this? For example, should I apply this first to the soil, water, and then wait a few days before adding the grass seeds? Or can I add this at the same time as the seeds and then water? Thank you.

Asked by: BTang
I’m hoping other customers also provide their experience as I have the same questions in terms of order of use - ideally. Thx.

Hi I have a area where there use to be flowers etc I tillered it fine, my next step is grass seeds however I wanted to know if I should be applying this before the seeds, or apply seeds let the growing process start and then fertilize? Provide steps plz

Asked by: Manny
It would depend on the type of seed you have. If you have a plain grass seed (no fertilizer coating), it can be applied anytime before and after. If you have a grass seed with the Watersmart plus coating it can be applied at the time of seeding or you can apply it 2 weeks after seeding. If you have Ez Seed, Patchmaster, Thickr Lawn Grass Seed Mix, or Canada's Lawn Response 911, you will need to wait 4-6 weeks before you can apply the starter fertilizer as those grass seeds have fertilizer in them.

We already laid new sod about three days ago. Is it too late to apply this? When would be the best time? Thanks

Asked by: yxfei
Our Starter Fertilizer is specifically designed to be used when seeding a new lawn, over seeding an existing lawn or placing sod/plugs/sprigs. The high phosphorus is needed for the new grass to become well established. You can apply it now to promote good root growth.

Can I mix this directly with pre germinated grass seed and spread the 2 at the same time? The pre germinated seed is moist and needs and agent added to be better distributed by spreader

Asked by: Mhic
The Scotts Turf Builder Starter Lawn Food for New Grass can be put down any time before or after seeding, but must be applied in a separate application. You cannot combine both products in the spreader simultaneously.

To achieve thick, healthy growth, we want to add as much of this fertilizer as it's safe to do so. Is there a risk of adding too much or is it the more the better? Also, how often do we need to apply this if we add the first application say in May?

Asked by: BTang
Thank you for your interest in Scotts Turf Builder Starter Lawn Food for New Grass. You will only want to apply the amount stated on the bag as too much fertilizer will burn the lawn. You may reapply in 2-4 weeks. Please contact us at http://tinyurl.com/kadgt3y with any other inquiries that you may have, and we will be happy to assist you.
