Rated 5 out of 5 by from saved by sharkbite the inspector came to check the rough in plumbing I did for my new tub. he said 'where is the mixing valve'. I said 'the what?'. he said code requires a mixing valve to limit hot water temp to 120 degrees at the faucet. that apparently has been code since 2009. his interpretation is that it has to be proximate to the location of the faucet - not on the water heater outlet, where a rational person would put it. so I had to squeeze one in under the tub, which was already in place with the surrounding structure firmly in place. sharkbite to the rescue. it was fairly easy to reconfigure the plumbing without needing to sweat new fittings under, and very near, the fiberglass & acrylic whirlpool and associated plastic jet plumbing. I'm very happy these things exist and eliminate the need for bringing in a high priced monetary extraction specialist (plumber)

Will this work if my cold water is in a 1/2" pipe, and my hot water a 3/4" pipe? Unfortunately this may be the only spot I can install, and this is the two closest cold and hot water lines.

    Asked by: newbie
Hi There, Thanks for the inquiry. The Thermostatic Mixing Valve you are referring to will work with 1/2" Copper or PEX only. Because you have two different size pipes for hot and cold, you may need to add a 3/4" to 1/2" reducer to the 3/4" hot pipe so you can install the TMV properly. Thanks.

Does the middle piece have to be installed with 1/2" pipes connected to it? I have 3/4" and i can use my existing device connectors that fit on this device. I'm just wondering if the inside of mixing valve of this model can 'handle' the extra volume

    Asked by: jbier
Hi there, Thanks for the inquiry. This mixing valve is available in 1/2" and 3/4 fittings, SharkBite, Sweat, PEX. At present Home Depot carries our 1/2" fitting model only. The body of the valve has a 1" union connector which sizes down to 1/2" or 3/4" fittings. If your existing fittings connect and seal properly then there should not be an issue with installation. Please be aware that our fittings and union nuts are designed for our product. Using other manufacturers fittings as a replacement will not guarantee a proper seal. Thanks.
