Can you use ultra light drywall on 2ft on center trusses. For the cielings instead of cieling board.

Asked by: Darrell
Yes it can be applied perpendicular only to the trusses and the maximum weight of insulation support by drywall is 1.3 psf. If you visit cgcinc.com, Sheetrock UltraLight Panel datasheet has a chart on page 2 regarding ceiling installation - single layer to explain everything.

how much weight can this sheet hold ?

My last question was not answered correctly. I am wondering how much weight per square foot this sheet can hold. I am looking to put weatherguard blow in insulation on top of this in the ceiling / attic. It is dense and weighty, approx. 2.2 lbs per square foot. Will this drywall sheet hold that weight installed on 16" centres ? Or should I use a non ultralight version or even 5/8" drywall ? Thank you for your help.
Asked by: Anonymous
When 1/2" CGC Sheetrock UltraLight panels are installed on a ceiling with 16" centres, the weight of overlaid insulation should not exceed 2.2 lbs/sq.ft. This is the maximum weight of insulation supported by 1/2" UltraLight, as posted on the product data sheet. If it will be used as a base for water-based spray-applied texture finish, be sure to install the panels perpendicular to the ceiling joists. For additional reassurance, you could use 5/8” CGC Sheetrock UltraLight Firecode 30 panels instead – they will have a higher maximum weight tolerance, but have only been tested on 24” centres, so we cannot provide that maximum weight value. As an additional reminder, when loose-fill insulation is used above the ceiling, the attic insulation must be installed immediately after the vapor barrier sheeting and ceiling panels are applied and before the gypsum panel joints are taped or any other wet finishing operations are begun on the walls or ceilings. Failure to follow this procedure creates a potential for moisture condensation on the back side of the gypsum panel and possible ceiling sag.
