Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to install A lightweight gypsum panel that is easy to install alone

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tapered? Uh-Huh I didn't think it was possible to screw up the manufacturing of drywall. I stand corrected. This product has the worst tapering on the edge I have ever seen. You have to look at it closely to even notice it. And the tapering isn't even consistent. After I had a couple of sheets up, some of the seems had as much as 1/8" of a difference in depth. Man was I P.O.'d. I will never again buy drywall from HD.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Overall acceptable Panels are lightweight but that also means they are more porous making them brittle when installing. I used them in the garage, so for that purpose, they are okay. Wouldn’t use them for inside the house applications.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra light It was manageable bringing it into the house because it was lightweight

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It does exaxtly what Drywall needs to do. As far as drywall goes it does exaxtly what Drywall needs to do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Whatever happened to 1/2 inch? Replacing large section of drywall removed due to water damage. Existing drywall is legitimate 1/2 inch. When I tried installing new material, it turns out that it is only 3/8 inch thick. Totally useless and a waste of money since it does not match.

I can re-drywall my house with 1/2 to be at code or do I need 5/8 in BC?

Asked by: Jess
Assuming that this is a single family detached house less the 600 m2, then you can use CGC Sheetrock UltraLight ½”. If it is something else, could you provide us with more details?

The way drywall is packaged is referred to as bundles, and there are two sheets per bundle. The display price is for one sheet.

Applying this board over painted popcorn ceiling. Type and length of screws? Given the thickness of the board, i'm worried about it sagging. Since applying over existing ceiling, does it still have to perpendicular to the trusses which is 24" on centre?

Asked by: snownow
Yes, CGC Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight Board is designed to resist sagging. Screw fasten the board to the ceiling joists with 41mm long Type W screws maximum spacing 300 mm (12” o.c.). Start screws 10 mm in from the tapered edge. Use the longest length of board possible to minimize the number of butt end joints that you will have to finish, as they are difficult to feather out. If the end of the board does not land on a framing member, then use a generous bead of construction adhesive along the end of the board, firmly press into the existing ceiling and carefully install 38 mm long Type G laminating screws to hold the board in place while the adhesive sets.

Can this product be used to cover (installed over rather than scraping) a textured ceiling?

Asked by: C Chick
Scraping is not as bad as seems as long as the existing gypsum Board is in good shape and worth saving. Most textured ceilings or popcorn as it is sometimes called does not adhere to the ceiling very well. If the popcorn has been painted it may be more difficult to remove. Mist the popcorn with water before scraping with a drywall knife. Do not allow the paper to become soaked or it will peel off with whatever you use for scraping and you will be re-boarding anyway. Are these drywalls really fire proof, can they used in the basement where the furnace is located

Asked by: Anonymous
Drywall panels do not have an individual fire rating, only when used in an fire assembly system, the system can achieve a rating. For example ULC W302 is a design tested Underwriters Laboratories of Canada, where a layer of 1/2" Firecode C on either side of 2x4 wood stud, 16" o.c. and joints finished provides a 45 minute fire rated construction. By definition building assembly’s fire resistance is a period of time the assembly will serve as a barrier to the spread of fire and how long the assembly can function structurally after it is exposed to a fire of standard intensity as defined by CAN/ULC S101 and ASTEM E110. Most designs use firecode Type X or C panels to achieve assembly ratings. To see other designs go to cgcinc.com, and review the Fire-Resistant Assemblies brochure SA-100.
