Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised This Simpson Strong-Tie E-Z Spike was quick and easy to install. I soaked the ground with water beforehand and used an 8-lb sledge hammer. The small piece of wood used to hammer in the spike must be smaller than 4x4 (i.e. smaller than 3.5 x 3.5). If you're using an offcut from a 4x4 post then trim off 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch from two adjacent sides otherwise the offcut will get stuck in the spike. The minor problems with the spike are: (1) there are no drainage holes in the bottom; (2) the two screw holes on one side line up too closely with the two screw holes on the adjacent side; (3) there should be holes on at least one other side to give you more options.

Does the hardware to install a wood post come with the kit?

No! When I purchased these there was no.hardware included. I recommend using the Simpson lag bolts
