If you have a metal sink - copper or stainless steel - you know all about the hollow booming sound they make when you use them to wash or rinse out a dish, glasses, etc., when you set those dishes down. Even just turning on the tap is loud. Boom, doink, boom. Every sound seems magnified. The fact that our stainless steel sink had a rubberized coating on the underside mattered not - it still was noisy, and I was determined to fix the issue if I could. After a bunch of research with unsatisfactory results - solutions that were far too pricey, far to difficult to install in a sink already in place, or serious overkill for a kitchen sink... I found this kit online at Home Depot, and decided to take a shot. It took two sets, one per each part of our double sink... because for most sinks, I'd say it will take eight of the tiles, two per side (it did for ours). With the bracing built in to the bottom, I found I didn't need to put any tiles there - but that is probably dependent on the design of your sink. One installation surprise: even though stiff enough to make you think this would be an issue, these things flex and adhere well around curves - even a bit of a compound curve. They just need a little working by hand to do it, but not much. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that the adhesive backing is very sticky, and once it grabs, good luck getting that square off again. Just use patience and you should be fine... a slight touch to the sink can be pulled free and the tile re-positioned, but know this - if gets a good hold, good luck! OK, so how were the results of lying on my back, reaching up, in and around the two parts of our sink and attaching these tiles? Really good. Our stainless sink now has about the same level of sound as our old porcelain-lined sink. It's a different sound, but volume wise they're very similar - and no more of that loud, hollow booming. Even my wife, who didn't fully get why I disliked how noisy our new sink was, really likes the results. So, if you've installed a metal sink and think it's too loud when in use - this kit is a fairly inexpensive, relatively easy to install solution that all but the most picky will find does the job just fine. (I'm somewhat picky myself, and I'm very happy with the results.)

I'm a PROUD owner of the Adams Cooper Farmhouse sink...it has not been installed yet. Are these pads the best option?

Also, will the 9 pads be enough?
Asked by: Mel22
Yes, although I could add two more, 9 works just fine.

I noticed a funny smell coming from this mat. it was already installed in the home I purchased . ( Under the bathroom sink) my concern is this : Are the materials in this item toxic? The smell reminds me of tar. I have a young daughter that I am concerned about and would like to know if the materials in this pad are toxic in any way shape or form?
Asked by: THD
Ours had a slight smell to them at first, but it went away. I suspect the product is tar based, but it has a sealed backing so once it's attached to the sink you can't touch the unsealed portion. I wouldn't think it would be a concern, but that's an individual decision. Also, there are a lot of smells that can be in an under sink cabinet - from paint, wood stain, or the adhesive of shelf paper if the cabinet was recently "touched up" for the sale of the house, or residual smells from chemicals that were stored there, and even smells coming from the drain. Try emptying the cabinet and leaving the door(s) open for a few days to air it out, and see if that solves the problem.
