Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unclear what harmful additives are in this Very difficult to find out what is actually in this product. Based on a little googling suspect? it has heavy metals / plasticisers agents added (and this is NOT actually true, pure boiled linseed), but would love to be told that I am wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BLO works well for finishing wood Boiled linseed oil works well for natural finishing of wood, at least more natural than other alternatives. (Just make sure to dispose of oiled rags safely)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Toxic and self-igniting The name "boiled linseed oil" is false advertisement. Turns out, nowadays they don't boil it, they just add HEAVY METALS to speed up polymerisation. It's an industry standard. However, the packaging looks like some harmless natural oil which is safe for kids. It's not! Don't use it for any wood which comes in contact with kids. Moreover, it's extremely flammable (which is mentioned on the bottle, but not prominently enough). It can even self ignite when rags soaked with it are thrown into trash.

For DECKS, you wrote "In shaded areas, treat the wood with preservative before apply Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) because the oil-treated wood can develop mildew and algae in a few months." Is not BLO a preservative? What preservative do you suggest?

Asked by: Sam74
Boiled Linseed Oil (BLO) is not preservative and is used as a stain or coating on the wood to give it shine and life , since water can penetrate even after applying BLO and can cause mildew and algae so recommended to use preservative before applying this, best preservative could be Armor all clear coat wood preservative (if don’t want any color on your wood), otherwise mocha brown or copper II can be used as well.

Is linseed oil good for skid wood made I to a planter?

Asked by: Anna
I used linseed oil on a cedar privacy wall it’s very transparent so it may not hide all the imperfections of skid wood. May want to use a stain.

Is this good for a deck? I built a brand new deck with cedar a couple of weeks ago and looking for a good stuff for treatment. Thanks

Asked by: Curi
When used as wood finish, linseed oil is able to coat and protect wood from weathering and other damage Boiled Linseed Oil: Treated linseed oil with added drying agents to speed up drying time. It is best used as a: • Thinner for artist’s oil paints • Light stain for wood • Oil finish for furniture and cabinets • Sealer and protective coating for concrete walks and floors, flagstones or interlocking stone Coverage: Four litres of a Boiled Linseed Oil and Paint Thinner mixture will cover a surface area of 37 - 60 m2 in a single coat. Use a brush to apply evenly and do not allow the mixture to pool. Please Note: Recochem Boiled Linseed Oil is treated with effective drying agents, which ensures quick drying time and reduces the possibility of a sticky finish. In shaded areas, treat the wood with wood preservative before applying Boiled Linseed Oil because the oil-treated wood can develop mildew and algae in a few months.

As alluded to in other comments / reviews - can someone please confirm if this product has chemical additives, and if so what they are? (eg heavy metals, plasticisers or any other hardeners)

Asked by: Paul
We add catalysts to speed drying time of the oil (compared to raw linseed oil, with a prolonged drying time)
