Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sommer 3/4hp Garage Door Opener Well, it's true, this is the quietest garage door opener I've ever heard. Not knowing about this Sommer opener, as it is not carried in most home depot stores (I don't know why?), I was about to purchase the competition's product. Then I saw it online on the home depot website and found only ONE Home Depot store about 30 km away that carried them. I picked one up the next day and installed it myself. I am so glad I bought this unit. It is so, so quiet, made of high quality components and easy to install and program with it's two included remotes. I had to buy a wireless keypad as this unit does not come with one. I think one should be included with the garage door opener. Although it doesn't offer all the bells and whistles like some of the competition, I would happily buy another Sommer without hesitation. Oh, my garage door is insulated steel and is 8 feet X 16 feet and the unit easily opens the door. Also, with the competition, I would be forced to buy a $70 extension kit for my 8ft door and I think this is ridiculous. The Sommer unit can open an 8ft door right out of the box. No extension needed. Great product and highly recommended!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As quiet as promised Received this product last week. Was a 3/4 HP model instead of a 1/2 HP model that I had ordered. Insatllation was simple and quick. The limit stops have screws in them that are supposed to hold them in plac in the steer runner, but I had to replace the screws with different ones because the original ones would not hold tight. Aside from that one issue, the installation was a breeze (easily done in 2 hr) and I was able to do it entirely by myself. The unit is truly as quiet as promised, can't hear it operating inside the house at all when the door to the house is shut. It does move a bit slower than our old opener, but the quietness is what I was looking for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sommer 550 3/4HP Garage Door Opener I purchased my home 2 1/2 years ago. The semi-detached garage was added on in 1997; it is not a heated garage and the old Stanley door opener struggled during our cold Saskatoon winter temperatures. Last summer I tried to lubricate everything that moved in the hopes that it would work better in winter, but as soon as the cold weather hit it was the same old same old, so I decided to find a replacement. I looked at the big names with the belt drives and chain drives but the Sommer opener with the motor being the only moving part intrigued me. When you are dealing with sticky moving parts due to cold weather the fewer moving parts you have the better! I ordered the Sommer from the Home Depot website on a Tuesday and it arrived on schedule Friday afternoon, and since we were having some warmer weather (0 C) at the time I went right at it and began the installation. Having never done this before, it took me 6 hours, including the time to remove the old opener. The installation was easy; I worked from the instruction manual provided and had no problems. I had previously watched two online instruction videos on installing this particular model and having done this, the installation manual made a lot more sense, so I would recommend to the buyer that they do the same. That was last weekend, and one week later the cold weather (-32 C) has returned with a vengeance! The new opener is working fine, my wife is happy and therefore so am I! It functions very quietly and most of what you hear is the door itself. It is just slightly slower than the old opener was, but not enough to be a problem. One other thing to mention is that the model that is supplied by Home Depot is the new model (1042V001) with 310 MHz remotes and rolling code for additional security; up until last June the previous Sommer opener (1041V000) had 315 MHz remotes without rolling code. The only issue we have encountered is with the remotes. The are designed as key fobs, and although a visor clip is provided for them, they have small recessed buttons which are difficult to press when you are wearing heavy winter gloves in a cold car. I would like to see a larger, more conventional remote with large buttons made available for these openers. Other than that I am very pleased with the Sommer and recommend it to the purchaser.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An innovative product I have a 7X12 wooden garage door. I installed the door opener in about 5 hours. It is a straight forward process with clear instructions. On first use I was amazed at how quiet it runs. After getting the correct stopping points adjusted it takes two up down cycles to self learn the tension of the door. I've been using for a few days now and love it. The design is innovative and it is a compact installation. The 3/4HP drive motor is the only moving part driving a chain sprocket that runs up and down a stationary chain in the rail. It uses sturdy sliding contacts to get its 24V power so there are no wires externally to the motor. Power comes from a contact in the control unit that simply pushes onto the rail. Time will tell if this sliding power contact system will have longevity. To me it is the only potential weakness. I don't see why anybody would dislike this garage door opener and it was reasonably priced for such a quality unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST I have had 3 or 4 different types of door openers over time. Buying this one was the right decision. So quiet. So positive with its operation. I have had this opener for the past 4 months. No problems. I expect it to give me trouble free operation and enjoyment for years to come. I will highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly Quiet and Quality Built I ordered the opener online and it was delivered the next day. Very special service at no extra cost from the distributor. Replaced a 5 year-old opener of a well-known brand, which had literally ground to a halt. I was as amazed at the high quality of the Sommer opener and how truly quiet it is. All the parts are finely finished and sturdy. The design, which has only one moving part, is brilliant and accounts in large part for its superior performance. On the negative side, the instructions were confusing as the installation manual and the instructional video frequently differed. However, I made a call to Sommer Canada and the technician was very helpful. It was delightful to have an instant answer from a live human who was knowledgeable about the product - what a change from so many other manufacturers! My extensive research on the internet confirms that Sommer is a reliable and responsive firm. Only time will tell, of course, but my initial experience has been extremely positive. I highly recommend this opener after very negative experiences with two other brands.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Slow, Expensive, no available parts It moves very slow (slower then chamberlain and genie) is the most expensive (its amazing how adding "made in germany" to it makes the price go up, and you can't get parts locally ANY WARE if you have any issues (eg, circuit board) the whole thing either goes in the garbage and you replace it with a good brand, or you wait for up to 3 months for the new part to arrive. The part will not be warrantied, and you will pay almost as much as buying the whole opener a second time. Why? Because you can't get the parts locally ANY WARE

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well. I am not particularly handy and I found the installation pretty easy. Delivery was prompt (within 2 days) even though I am way out of town. I was removing an old Stanley model, which had burnt out and stopped completely (it came with the house). Total installation time was one afternoon and a morning. I had to remove the existing opener and that took around 2 hours. I work at a methodical pace (not very quick!) and found it took around 4 hours to install the new one. I was able to install it without assistance, but you will need a tall step ladder to run the cables and position things correclty. A few times I had to re-read a section of the manual to understand, but overall I found it clear and well put together. The only part I really misread was how to remove the connecting wires if you needed to take them out (The wires were not twisted correctly the first time). It took me 5 minutes to relalise that I had to push down the release mechanism, rather than lever it (Yes in the manual it does say push down!). The product itself seems well built and with a simple design with fewer moving parts. In my full time profession, the principal of less complexity usually means you end up with a more relaiable a product. As for the noise level, all I can say is it's like night and day. We have a two car garage with seperate doors, my side burnt out, but my wife's is still the old opener (Stanley). My side is quite and silky smooth, with a gentle start and end. Her's is noisey and sounds like a small earthquake. I have no other experince of garage door openers, but this one does sound quite. I'll be replacing her side as soon as I can find the time. The 3/4 HP model is perfectly adequate for the single 8ft door. One thing that did confuse me is that when first plugged in, the lights will continually flash on and off at one second intervals. I though I had miswired something or the photosensors were not working correcly. What this flashing means is that it needs to perform a full open and close cycle twice to sense the weight of the door for speed adjustments. It would have saved me 10 minutes of another check of the wiring if this had been mentioned earlier. We have a ~30M driveway and when I am just at the entrance (to the driveway (line of sight) I can open the door. I did not have any missing pieces and I did not have to call the technical support line. I will update here if any problems develop and I may even post a video to YouTube of the difference in noise level. Overall: So far, very happy and I would recommend.

I can't guarantee it but I think this unit would be HomeLink compatible. Sommer is listed on the HomeLink website as compatible. The unit has 6 electric terminals. Terminals 1+2 can connect 24 volt accessories. Terminals 3+4 connect control device (wall station or possibly HomeLink??) Terminals 5+6 connect photoeyes Handheld remotes are programmed by installer. Easy to program. Two buttons on handheld transmitter and you can program one button open, second close OR same button open/close and use second button for alternate function such as partial open.

do you sell the sommer 3 ft rail extension kit (part #1634) to go with the 550 or 800 operator?

Asked by: Anonymous
When I purchased this opener about 1 month ago, home depot did not sell the extension kit. You can order the extension kit directly from Sommer's website, though you cannot order the opener itself from their website.

Does it really work for an 8 feet high door?

I was checking Sommer's website and I don't find this model (1040V000). On the website, every garage door opener comes with the specific rail (for 7 or 8 feet doors)
Asked by: Anonymous
no, needs a different rail (longer = more travel)
