Is this type 1 or type 2 Portland cement ?

Asked by: Jilli
(GU) General Use (GUL) General Use Limestone Portland Cement is a finely ground powder that is mixed with sand, stone and water, to produce concrete. USES (GU) General Use and (GUL) General Use Limestone, Portland Cement are for use around the home. (HE) High Early, Portland Cement is for use around the home where high-early strength is required. NOTE: Exterior concrete exposed to freezing should be airentrained. PROCEDURES Mix and substrate temperatures should be maintained between 5 ºC and 30 ºC (40 ºF and 86 ºF) for at least 24 hours prior to and 48 hours after. Mixing: The following proportions (by volume) are recommended: • 1 part Portland Cement • 2.5 parts concrete sand • 2.5 parts 3/4” (19 mm) stone • 2 to 3 parts water: 20 L to 23 L (4.5 US gallons to 5 US gallons) per bag of cement The key to producing high-quality concrete is the proportion of cement to water used. For this reason, use only as much water as is required to make the mix workable. Any excess water will lower the durability and strength of the hardened concrete. CURING Concrete develops strength via a chemical process combining cement and water, called hydration. After placing and finishing, the concrete should be protected from drying out or freezing. Hydration continues until all cement particles react with water, or until cold temperatures slow or stop the chemical reaction. Curing should take place for a period of seven (7) days and can be achieved using polyethylene (plastic) sheeting, spray-on curing compounds, or complete water saturation. PAINTING Concrete must be fully cured (approximately 28 days) and dry before painting. Refer to paint manufacturer directions for application instructions. YIELD Using proportions suggested, one 40 KG (88 lb) bag of cement will produce about 3.5 ft3 (0.1 m³) of concrete mix, approximately. PACKAGING 20 KG (44 lb) bag 30 KG (66 lb) bag 40 KG (88 lb) bag STORAGE & SHELF LIFE Material should be stored in a dry, covered area, protected from the elements. Unopened bags have a shelf life of 12 months.

Follow up to my previous question "Is this cement I should use for creating a slurry? Thanks": Is the referenced product strong enough to bond concrete suspended above the ground? Thanks

Asked by: JJLL
Slurry is an old style application used by contractors. Engineers using Technology have since developed liquid glues that replace the slurry you mention and aid in a successful repair. Some products will reference how to use the material, for example the SAKRETE fast patch I referenced in an earlier reply. The directions advise how to use the same material as a slurry brush coat prior to placement of the material at repair depth. As for your specific question will your plan work depends on various components of a repair. Explained - Over the years for a concrete repair have developed guidelines that when followed provides that the best satisfactory results are obtained. Some of the recommendations include : buy the right material, surface preparation, proper material for project, air and water temperature, proper water content, how to correctly apply the material, proper curing are a few recommendations to follow on a products directions. For one example on our SAKRETE Sand Mix we recommend: PROCEDURES Mix and substrate temperatures should be maintained between 5oC and 30oC (40oF and 86oF) for at least 24 hours prior to and 48 hours after. Surface Preparation: New construction: Prepare the area as required for the project. Repairs: Surfaces to be repaired must be sound and clean. Remove all delaminated or unsound concrete by chipping with a hammer and chisel or using a stiff wire brush. Clean the area to be repaired with potable water, leaving the concrete saturated but free of standing water. Some very porous concretes may require several applications of water to ensure complete saturation. If required, construct forms around the old sidewalk or slab. Use a level to ensure the forms are set at the correct height and there is adequate slope for water drainage For best results, apply SAKRETE Concrete Adhesive to the existing dampened substrate before pouring. CURING Curing means maintaining proper moisture and temperature. Allow newly placed material to set until surface is hard to the touch. SAKRETE Sand Mix will set in approximately 6 hours. Then keep material damp or cover with plastic to prevent evaporation of mix water for at least three (3) days. Protect from freezing for at least 24 hours. Can be opened to foot traffic in 24 hours. Hope this helps in your project.

Is this cement I should use for creating a slurry? Thanks

Asked by: JJLL
Hello JJLL, good question with various mixes, uses and suggestions. With the Limited information supplied it’s probably best to provide a reply where a slurry is referenced in one of our products. .... https://www.kpmindustries.com/KingHomeImprovementProducts/product/sakrete-fast-patch/...... The only reference we make to a slurry coat/ mix is with our SAKRETE fast patch and it’s application : .... Mixing: Place a small amount of SAKRETE fast-patch in a clean container and add cold, clean water until the mix is like a slurry. Brush or broom this slurry coat over the dampened repair area to act as a prime. Then, place remaining contents into a clean mixing container. Add approximately 120 mL (4 oz) of clean water per 1 KG (2.2 lb), or enough to achieve a workable mix (mortar consistency like putty). Do not mix longer than 1 minute. Avoid a soupy mix. Excess water reduces strength and durability, and can cause cracking. In cold weather, use warm water to accelerate the set. In hot weather, use cold water to slow the set. Hope this helps.

I'll be making a large flower pot with added cement embellishments, would this concrete suffice and do I need to add anything to the mix other then water?

Asked by: Darlene
We recommend using the Sakrete Sand Mix to make your pottery embellishments. Portland Cement is an ingredient to Concrete Mix / Sand Mix (concrete without stone). The Portland Cement on its own would not be able to hold shape or structure.

On E side of my house, I have a walkway. On W side, I have loose 2"-3" smooth gravel. I'd like to take my gravel, add sand, cement, & H2O, mix it all together, & pour a new concrete pathway. Will this product work for my scenario?

Asked by: ISOGAM
Consider buying SAKRETE pre blended Concrete mixes for your project. The making / mixing of a durable long lasting concrete mix requires proper blending of correct cement to use, cement ratios, clean aggregate, clean sands, clean water and the proper amount of water. Buying a pre blended material provides a more durable, long lasting finished concrete and eliminates the risk of a mix-your-own that may not be as durable.... please visit https://www.kpmindustries.com/ for more information.
